I just want to write and let the world know what kind of company this is. I have owned 3 Western digital (WD) hard drives. All 3 have not lasted longer then 2 years, the most recent has only lasted 1 yr.. 4 months. But the kicker of this situation is the external hard drive WD make have a warranty of 1 year. but the internal Hard drives that are inside the units have a 3-5 year warranty. So I called WD because the hard drive inside the case went bad. So this is how the call went.
The phone rang, and I got contacted to someone over sea's and could barely speak english. I told him my problem and he said sorry it's out of warranty and there is nothing he could do. So i said the hard drive inside the unit has a 3 year warranty. he said well you bought the external hard drive so you only get a 1 year warranty. I was going no where with him so I asked to speak to a manager.
Mind you it's bad enough I lost all my info, but now I couldn't get a replacement. so the manager comes on and says there is nothing he can do. I said to him because I buy the complete package the WD makes I get punished. and if i went out and bought a internal hard drive and put it in a case i'd get a 3-5 year warranty? he responded back, yea. I said dont you think this is a little unfair? and he said sorry. So then trying to be slick I said ok so what if I take the Hard drive out will i get the 3-5 year warranty? he said no you'll void the warranty because they marry the case and the hard drive as 1 unit so they know the hard drive came out of it. But his way of solving the situation he said is they offer a service to recover the data, I asked how much does that cost. he said about $3k. I asked to talk to his manager and he sad it would take 48 hours for them to call me back. (still waiting)
Long story short, if you are interested in buying a western digital I recommend buying a internal hard drive and putting it in a case which are very cheap. Just search external hard drive case, and tons will pop up. by doing this you'll get a real warranty.

- Good for simple saves, not so hot for email
This Western Digital 320 GB MyBook external hard drive is a snap to set up. It's easy to save your My Pictures and My Documents files. Saving your emails is a different matter entirely.
I asked Western Digital's User Support Center for help in saving my emails, both of which are on widespread email providers: Microsoft Outlook and AOL. The User Support Center was no help whatever. All they would tell me is I have to contact Microsoft and I have to conduct AOL. But my contract is with Western Digital. Why should I have to spend futile hours on the phone with Indian subcontractors who know nothing of Western Digital when Western Digital promised me user support?
So, after you've spent your money, nobody at Western Digital will hold your hand. You are on your own when it comes to saving emails. - Great Choice
Worked right out of the box; just plugged it in and it was up and running. I removed the software that shipped on it. Not a hiccup since I put it to work on a daily basis well over a month ago. Fast, and not a sound. Glad I did not opt for the more expensive model I considered, with what I now realize would have just been distracting, and probably annoying, additional lights. Besides, if I want to know how much free space remains on the drive, LEDs that show that somewhere around 3/4 of the drive is full is not my idea of reliable information. Also, unless you are planning to stream video from your external hard drive, Firewire is inconsequential - at least on a PC. Glad I did not waste my money on a more expensive model. This one does its job quite well, and is all that is needed for additional storage and external backup capacity.

- Great Value for Storage Amount
I bought the 320 GB MyBook about 6 weeks ago and have had absolutely no problems with it. It was very simple to use; I just plugged it into an open USB and it was ready to go. It comes with optional softare that I chose not to install. For just under $100, I found it to be a great value for enough storage space to backup my iPod and music folder as well as store all of my video files.

- Not For Everyone
Just like the other fella said, this body has the sleak black polish look that sratches easily if you're not careful. It also is annoying when you get fingerprints all over it!

I bought it at target for 90 bucks, not a bad deal eh? Still I'd have preferred a normal body and not this crappy passport style one, I mean who uses this kinda cheap plastic?

For the price can't be beat, for the other factor of the body it is lousy. My advice is simple, maybe buy this and put it under your desk somewhere but don't clean it with a towel or anything use a micro fiber cloth isntead as it provides the least amount of chance to scratch the surface. Seems to work ok then.

It is quiet :( if only the body was not this horribly annoying plastic polish look, oh well.
