I paid a lot of money for Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student Edition. Some of the information I get is garbled, nothing even close to readable. Some of it works, but it should ALL work PERFECTLY!!!! Don't even get me started on VISTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is Disappointing
Installation went very smoothly, and carried over preferences and custom dictionary. Biggest benefit was Entourage and fixing some peculiarities of old version. Back up of email works quickly and logically. Biggest disappointment was loss of macros, which I used regularly in WORD and is one of the reasons I was productive with the Mac and Microsoft Office. Loss of macros is step backwards for me. Time to load Word in particular is much slower than 2004 version, though I expected faster. Entourage occasionally hangs up (opening and closing) without reason, and checking Microsoft website suggests other people have this problem without any clear remedy. The way custom styles and default templates works is different and takes some getting used to. Help Key isn't. Lacks answers to the basic questions I have, which would be the same questions any new user would have. Illogical help function in my view...and certainly incomplete. Did these guys test this product with real users??


Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Word 2008 stinks, even after SP1 "upgrade"
On a G5 w/ Tiger no crashes, but a variety of problems with Word 2008 even after SP1:
1) The document map in a large document picks up lots of things NOT marked as headings, and changing styles does not help; after saving the rubbish is back in the map
2) End of page printout problems where some words or a line from the end of a page get repeated on the next page
3) Most annoyingly (and ever since the first "upgrade") a problem with "orphan" smart quotes, that is, opening quotes at the very end of a line and closing quotes as the first character of a line.
4) Justification problems with apostrophes; for example huge spaces forming between a word and 's (it ' s).

Problems 3 and 4 are solved by downgrading to the initial release of Word / Office 2008. But that brings back the feared scrolling problem: often one must first click on a page to be able to scroll. All in all, neither "upgrading" nor "downgrading" seem to help with this crappy product; even word processors of the eighties managed to avoid orphan opening or closing quotes. What is Microsoft doing??

I was disappointed. I thought that by buying Microsoft Office for my Mac the documents would be compatible with the PC's at work. It's not so I feel I wasted a lot of money. It works great on the Mac but the program that came with my new Mac did too. I guess I should have been smarter.


Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - MS Office, Home Addition
Product has a bug that causes frequent shutdowns. Strongly advise use of auto save to protect your work. Software has a new interface that appears in an expandable column instead of rows across the top of the screen. This works well for documents in Word but covers up a portion of the worksheet in Excel. Takes some getting used to! I would not have upgraded the software except for the fact that I needed an additional license.
