Our local library has a wide selection of books in several formats including PDF. You need to have the Adobe Digital Edition software (downloadable from the library). This allows you to download the books, and they have an expiration date after which they are not readable. But they are all free. This includes books on the current best sellers list. This was the feature that made me decide on the Sony PRS-505 instead of the Kindle.
Also, I have had no problems loading my own PDF or Word files.

Very slick looking device. It's nice to hold and easy on the eyes.

The resolution on the screen is awesome- but not different from the Kindle. It's relatively easy to transfer books and files, but once on the reader, there is no way to delete or rename or annotate the material. You have to plug it back in and use the (Windows only) transfer application to remove files. Also, you cannot use the device while it's plugged in.

The slowness of the refresh is much commented on and a valid concern, but it doesn't irk me as badly as it does other reviewers. I am confident future evolutions will be much improved in speed, though this make take some time to develop since apparently it's the screen technology, not necessarily a lack of processing horsepower.

The device can read PDFs- but you won't be able to. That is- the zoom factor is not nearly enough to read most PDFs. The only way I am able to actually read a PDF is to open up Acrobat Professional (not free) and export it as RTF (rich text format). This works great, but is a pain and would be yet more expense if you need to buy Acrobat (maybe there are opensource PDF converters out there).

If you stick with Sony's format books, this thing rocks... once you actually open the book and start reading. Overall, I'd buy it again- hopefully the price will continue down to something a little more affordable.

I am an avid reader who can probably read 3 to 4 books a week if I had the time, but I am always buying the same books over and over because of cover changes or editing changes...Now I no longer buy doubles because the software doesn't allow it, plus I no longer have to store all the books I buy because they are stored on my computer. This item is lightweight and easy to read from offering small, medium, and large print.. My only complaint is that it doesn't light up for night reading...

This is by far the best, sexiest, book reader out there!

It's made for what you'd expect - reading books. Unlike Amazon's Kindle which is feature rich and "busy", Sony helps you disconnect from the world and enjoy the reading - the main reason we all love books in the first place!

If you're really into being able to buy the books wirelessly, read your blogs on your book reader, lookup stuff on WikiPedia - GET AMAZON'S KINDLE!

If you just care about a super small footprint, great device, a great book reader and a GREAT PDF reader, simple but useful MP3 Player - GET SONY!

There are TWO things missing from this device: ability to write your own notes (which would be something I'd really like to use), and ability to look up words in the dictionary with a click of a button.

If you need the two - get Kindle - if you don't mind looking up the words later on or on your iPhone for example - get Sony and you'll be more than satisfied.

Main reason I bought it is that Kindle looks like it was made in 70's. Sony looks like it was pulled out of a Star Trek movie. I like books - but I like my gadgets too ;)

The choice is yours :)

I'm a sixteen-year-old boy (go figur) and this thing is just perfect. It comes with me wherever I go (games, movies, trips) it has become a nessesity for me. I bought one for my birth day six months ago and I, embarassingly enough, left it one the car roof and only noticed until it flew by at fifty mph. It did survive the impact with little more than a bent corner. After this fall though I did by the metal case which I would recomand to anybody. The issue with the backlight is complete BS, people don't seem to notice that a backlight hurts the eyes which would defeat the purpose of the incredible paper-like quality of this device. One other thing that no one has mentioned is when you bring this out side the sun doesn't glare off the screen into your eyes like a regular book would so I count that as a plus.

I gave it a five-out-of-five because it does everything I bought it for so why would I complain.
