Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sony Excellence shines through
As a newbie to the mp3 player market, I did lots of research before making the purchase. I didn't want an Apple product, for all the reasons that others didn't want one (proprietry software, build quality etc). I read lots of reviews and the Sony NWZ 818 stood out from all the others. I purchased the leather case from Innov8GB (excellent service and aftersales care, throughly recommend them) and the mains charger made by Sony. Out of the box, the NWZ is an awesome piece of kit. The build quality is excellent. One niggle is the 'hold' switch on the rear of the case. When I put the player in the leather case, it slides the switch to HOLD. A piece of black electricians tape solves that, but Sony could have done better here. Supplied headphones are amazing; The various sound enhancers on the player really do make a difference and I use them all. Battery life is good. I won't be using the video playback, as I bought the unit to play music, so I can't comment on that. However, photo's are clear, precise and very viewable. As with most MP3 players around, this one does NOT support gapless playback; That's OK if each song ends and has a pause before the next begins, but it's a real pain if you listen to tracks that glide into each other.(Pink Floyd dark side of the moon for example) If its sounds OK on the CD, it should sound OK on the player. Sadly it doesn't. Apparently its a technology thing with MP3 format, not the player's fault. Haven't got the hang of file deletion yet. I deleted an album from the player, as instructed. Windows Explorer says its gone, but the NWZ still playes it. Must do some research! Would be good if Sony produced a 16 Gig version, in non bluetooth guise, but 30 CD's on already, at MP3 256KBps bit rate is very good. Tried WMA variable bit rate at a higher overall bit rate and couldn't tell the difference between the two, So I'll stick to the lower bit rate and get more on. All in all though, if you buy this unit, you won't be disappointed!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - poor shipping
I ordered this from Amazon hoping to get it in time for a birthday but four working days later it has not even left the wharehouse even though they sent an email saying it did. I could have purchased this from a competitor for cheaper price and recieved it the same time but I thought Amazon had faster service..this is the second time this has happened to me..very dissapointed in this....I am thinking of selling my Amazon stock now. If they can't compete in service and price they can't compete...next time I am going with the competitor!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great player! Few minor wishes but still love it!
Yay Sony! I very much enjoy this new player. It is actually quite compact, very nicely pocketable. Most impresed with the sound quality and battery life! Have had it on for half the day and battery bar still shows full. This player operates so smoothly and fast! Amazing how quickly this player wakes up/powers on and is ready t go! Beautiful screen and I set it to horizontal orientation for more enjoyable viewing. I was easily able to use this with Rhapsody service too. FM radio & reception works nicely as well.

Also wanted to note that I was using a Creative Zen V Plus and this thing is way better. For some reason seems that I was only getting a few hours before battery was running low...very annoying. Sony player wakes from sleep and/or powers up so fast where waiting for my Zen V Plus seemed to take forever. Powers my audio in aux line and speakers with much better sound quality than the Zen V Plus. Very great quality feel to Sony player compared to lightweight plastic feel to Zen V Plus.

My only wishes are that this used a more standard wall charger since I had to purchase one for about $40 US in order to not have to charge by USB on my computer. No expandable memory card slot, no voice recorder, calendar and I really wish offered higher capacity like 16gb. Headphones that were included sound fine but has the cheapo wire and jack so don't think will last long. Would be nice if Sony included some kind of pouch or case too.

Overall, I will be enjoying my new player. Bye bye to the lag & battery annoyances with my old Zen V Plus!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Music great, video is a disapointment
I was initially very pleased with this player. I loaded lots of songs and pictures on it. I bought this for my 12 year old. I had put off buying one for a long time because I knew little about mp3 players. A week after we got this one, I also bought a Creative Zen mp3 player, also in a 8 GB. I like the Sony shuffle feature. Simply select it and it plays a random variety of songs. The Zen lacks this. I have not learned just yet how to set up playlists. In time I will. The Sony sounds great. The FM tuner works good. It comes with a quality set of in the ear headphones. I am very disappointed in the video player part of this device. There is a sample clip preloaded on the device. It looks great. I won't knock the small size of the screen. I knew it ahead of time. I am unable to load any of my own videos on to this player. They must be converted to a format that will play. This in itself is not unusual. The Zen requires a conversion also. What I am really aggravated about is this: I contacted Sony for technical support. I explained that I was trying with multiple failures to transfer converted video to my player. I had used Windows Media Player 11 and also Roxio Easy Media Creator. Well, this won't work with Sony. Apparently they have some type of proprietary code. I was told in order to transfer video and have it actually work, I needed to purchase additional software from Sony. Specifically Image Converter or Media Manager Pro. Incidentally, Image Converter is no longer available per Sonys website. The only Media Manager was for a PSP. I own several Sony cameras and video cameras. The videos I wanted to put on the MP3 player were shot on Sony cameras. I am very disappointed in Sony right now. The other player I own, the Creative Zen 8 GB model came with software to convert video to the appropriate format. It also has a larger screen and is less money. It got a great review from CNET. Com. So, if you want a great mp3 player for music, I can reccomend the Sony. If you want to play video clips, avoid it. By the way, I opened the package, so I can't return it to Amazon.
