- NUVI 760 - A Good GPS but can be improved
I got the NOVI 760 for travel in the USA because it would be cheaper to use rather than renting a GPS from a Car Rental company for the length of my stay on a long trip. Plus at the end of the trip I would still own the GPS for future use. That is a great deal.

However since using the unit I have found it a really good GPS with very useful features and 2008 maps supplied are fairly accurate for most cases. In several areas in Florida it seems to have slightly incorrect information on some locations - its gets you to the general area but in a very few cases some of the fine details can be out by up to several hundred yards.

Improvements.
Turns: I would like to see Garmin add an alert on reaching turns - it would be really good to have a "bing" tone played to mark the exact point of the turn. The voice instruction is good but sometimes slow for complicated or close turn environments.

Map Updates:
1. Like the favorites folder feature Garmin should add a map updates folder to allow users to update location information on the go. In some cases the onboard map is out or does not have new features since the map was published. The Update Folder would address this while avoiding cluttering up the Favorites folder but also allow for the user to upload their locations corrections to Garmin.
2. Online User sharing for location updates. Garmin should host a user's forum for location updates that would allow for interim map updates to be shared by users.

LOCAL MAPS
The NUVI should support a feature to create local maps for users where published map data is not available. I live in Jamaica and have been build up a local map of locations by using the Favorites Folder and turning on the show Trip Log feature to create a virtual road map of streets that I have traveled on.
An improvement on this would be to add a feature for Local Maps. In this case the user could either down load the travel data from the actual paths driven from the NUVI Trip Log to a PC or edit the Trip Log on the NUVI to add street names and define roads and intersections and geographic features. With this feature the NUVI could be used anywhere in the world by the user just driving about their region and gradually build up their own maps. This data could also be uploaded to Garmin for future processing into maps for users in areas where it is not economic to publish professional maps.

4. User Created Folders
It could be useful for Garmin to add more Favorites Folders say 5 to - 10 to allow users to file locations in relation to Personal, Work, Vacations, etc.

5. Other features to consider;
- POD Cast player
- Wi-Fi connection and web browser interface

Overall I have grown to really like the NUVI 760 much more than just a travel tool it is a really a handy device to have as an MP3 player, Photo viewer, Language Translator, Calculator and more.

One user note, however, make sure of the mode (Auto,Bike or Pedestrian) you are using. I set the unit to Pedestrian once and then tried to navigate in a car and the unit was "confused" giving wrong directions - I suspect because of the Mode setting. Once I corrected this (back to Auto) everying was fine.

Overall this item works as advertised. Except, I don't know if I'm the problem, or the unit is. The data screen has occasionally shown over 3000 miles travelled on a particular trip a couple of times....I haven't even had it for that many miles. Second, despite any changes I try to make in the settings menu, it seems to take us through towns and on side streets....winding all over....instead of sticking to main thoroughfares. Even when the destinations are city-to-city. On vacation, do we really want to hit all the "business loops" when trying to make distance on the highway?

I may be contacting Garmin. Trouble is, under warranty, you have to pay shipping and insure it.

Pro: Excellent user interface and bright colors. Automatically changes the color scheme at night. Touch screen is very reliable. The "recovery" mode when you miss a turn is very nice. I visited Portland recently and missed a couple key turns. The unit recovered nicely, recalculated the route and got me to the destination. Battery life is what I expected based on the product advertisement.

Con: The most recent map downloads didn't have a couple places that I thought would be in the database. Probably not the fault of the unit. The speaker is somewhat hard to hear in the vehicle if you have excess road noise of have the stereo on. The FM transmitter seems weak. Not sure running the sound through your FM stereo buys you anything. The Blue Tooth function worked fairly well. My phone locked up once, Palm Centro, but once I figured out the sequence to disengage the phone when I left the vehicle, it worked fine. As I mentioned, people's voices are hard to hear through the unit's speakers when you had the volume turned up due to excessive road noise.

- Mildly Disappointing
I've previously owned a Nuvi 660 and was very happy with it. I gave my unit to someone else and bought the 760. I've had to return the unit twice and I'm just resigning myself to the third replacement unit I received. The first unit I received had a speaker that was weak and had a slight "buzz" when any sound would issue from the speakers. So I replaced it.

The second unit had a defective mic. This normally wouldn't be an issue since I don't normally like using the bluetooth speakerphone. However, new laws in my state now require handsfree of some type while driving, so I've had to use it once in a while. With the second unit, the other party couldn't hear me. So I asked for a third unit.

Third one is ok. Not great by any stretch of the imagination. Still got the somewhat blurred speaker, but the mic works ok. One thing I did notice is that the gps reception seems to be more limited than the 660. Perhaps the internal antenna affected the sensitivity?

Anyway, Amazon was great because they accommodated my numerous returns. However, I was hoping that Garmin would've made sure that their popularity did not result in a dilution of quality. The Nuvi line definitely degenerated from the 660 to the 760.

- Excellent GPS Unit - Great Value
I bought this unit about a month ago. It is very very good. No problems with routing in the city and on the highway (see exceptions below). The route calculation is done very quickly and it recalculates quickly too if you take a turn not on the original route. I've also found the "Detour" option helpful when I've been stuck in construction zone traffic.

I especially like the Custom POI feature. It allows you to put in your own way point/Points of Interest. There is excellent third party software for doing this (see http://geepeeex.googlepages.com).

On the other hand, I was disappointed that the included mapping software is vintage 2008 and the upgrade to 2009 will cost an extra $55. Seems like that should have been included. I also have found that in my travels out west that I do get the occasional misrouting, for example, I've had routes that suggest using a private dirt road instead of the paved public street or sent down roads that dead end. I don't think this can be avoided but it pays to remember that this can happen if you are off the beaten path.
