Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Do not buy this as a gift!! Download maps quickly or they will not let you!
We received a tomtom GPS as a gift. We found out from tomtom that ONLY the original owner was allowed the maps update, and then ONLY within 30 days of purchase date. Since we did NOT have the receipt (it was a gift) we are not allowed even one download of the maps updated. The map on the tomtom was older, and didn't even have our neighborhood on it (and our neighborhood is over 3 years old). So they REALLY in the maps selling business, with a cost of an update about $60. We are very unhappy with their decision to do this as they can easily see from the serial number of our tomtom that we have NEVER used the "one time" update of the maps.

I purchased this product about a month ago and have found it to be frustratingly disappointing. I've found that I lose signal A LOT and a few times it has been when I am approaching a turn and am not sure what the next step is... I drive in the city a lot and get absolutely no signal when I am near tall buildings so its useless there. The routes that it recommends are not always the best ones (I've tested it on local trips to see where it would take me) - and its driven me down a dead-end street more than once now. I've had experiences using more expensive models in friends cars (Magellan Maestro to be exact) and the "service" provided was just better. This model does NOT offer the spoken street name feature is a HUGE drawback, it just makes using it more difficult when you are driving, especially in fast moving traffic.

This is one case where I would say to spend the money on a better model or different brand. I am sorry that I went the bargain route here. I chose this one b/c it was a Consumer Reports Best Buy, I'm not sure what they were thinking.

I've dealt with electronics for several decades and never encountered something that was as simple to use for what it was meant to do. I am very happy to have purchased the Tomtom and recommend it to anyone.


Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Major update problems! Major disappointment!
I got mine right after New Year's 2008 and it worked great for a while, but suddenly last month I started having big problems with the downloaded updates. Now everytime I TRY to download updates I get error messages and it craps out! The error reporting systems sucks too! Its anonymous, so there is no real help to be had! Just like a throwback to the old 486 computers when you try to install anything. I now cant even seem to use it at all! Do yourself a favor and go for a Garmin! I got a GPS III Pro when the technology just came out and despite its older technolgy, still works good.

I have only used it a couple time, it seems to work good. One time I put the wrong road in, it sent me there, but I was wrong. So fat, so good.
