- Disappointing upgrade.
I recently upgraded Quicken (premier) 2006 to 2008. I had used 2005 before 2006 and the upgrade then went smoothly, with no noticeable problems or defects in the features. Boy was 2008 not the same. The installation was fine, but when I loaded it up, the tax section had the wrong values. After checking for upgrades, 2008 upgraded to a more recent version that specifically said it fixed a crash in the tax section. After installing it the tax section now crashed for me. Further, I noticed the scroll for the mouse didn't work everywhere, a lot of the new sections of the ui seemed to have incomplete features. I've downloaded another update which has finally fixed the Tax crash, but now help will not work. Quicken is blaming an upgrade in Windows Explorer, which I can mostly accept if it weren't for the fact that a lot of other software also uses html help and it continues to work fine. In addition I have two checking accounts, and the new savings section (which looks nice) always tells me I have insufficient funds. There is no way to specify which accounts to use for income, which is odd because it is picking up the paid bills in both accounts.

Needless to say, while the updates fixed a few issues, this seems very incomplete. I like the direction they are taking with the features, but it needs more work.

- Quicken, next installment
If you are a new Quicken user, get this version and run updates as Intuit releases them to fix bugs. There are some things annoying to a previous Quicken user, but you won't know them to have that reaction. If you are an established Quicken user, and you are on v2006 or 2007, update only if you need to ... some interface changes are annoying. Overall, it works well on XP SP2 with 1GB RAM (forget their 128MB minimum -- use 512 even on Win2k, XP--1GB, VISTA -- well, its Vista). [Installation note: I've upgraded 1/2 dozen copies now, fixed another 6 attempts, and installed eight clean. Clean up your machine and registry BEFORE you do this! Take the notes about necessary MS updates VERY seriously, even where it they are only "suggested". Turn off your antivirus, anti-spyware, and firewall (AAUGH!) and the installation will be much smoother.]

- Why bother to upgrade?
I made the misteak (sp.) of upgrading becasue I thought it might fix three errors I have with the 2007 version: 1) does not update one brokerage account 2) will not download my bank information automatically and 3) is slow on processing transactions in my investment accounts. The new version was not faster, did not update the one brokerage account and still will not take my bank account automatically - forcing me to do it manually each time.

The new version also worked less well than the last version on one of my brokerage accounts - now missing transactions!

So, I wasted my money on this "upgrade."

I was going to upgrade from 2006 to 2008 when I orderd my 2007 Turbo Tax--sure glad I read these reviews first! I have been a loyal Quicken user since version #5 but I think it is time to look at Microsoft Money. I know others have already done this but I was hoping that Intuit would get its act together with this version. It looks like it's only getting worse.
