I purchased the Brother HL-4070CDW in December of 2007. It has been one problem after another since. Today I tried to install the lastest drum they sent. They admitted the previous drums were defective. Now this new one will not even fit in the printer.

Do yourself a favor and buy HP or Canon or anybody but Brother. It is not just this model. There entire line has problems. I should have researced them deeper before buying. It just goes to prove what my mother used to say. You get what you pay for. This Brother stuff is pure junk.

- Mac Leopard users, don't use the driver disk
Not sure if this was mentioned, but if you are running the Leopard, you HAVE the latest drivers pre-installed on your Mac. You can not download these from Brother, and it isn't included on the disk. Just unpack, remove all the shipping stuff, and plug it in.

But if you did install the because you like to read instructions (there are stickers all over the product saying you should - but I think those are for Windows users), you may have some issues printing from photoshop. I was lucky enough to find another mac and copied the drivers from the library folder. I had to manually point at the driver. Later, my system update notified me of a newer printer driver, I installed it and still works great.

Simply go to printers in the system preferences. I have mine connected via ethernet to my Airport and it found the printer via rendevous.

When I first powered it on, it thought the back cover was opened, a good forceful close did the trick. You have to treat it like you would a printer at work, even though you paid a good penny for it.

I bought this to save from printing large documents from my photo printer. Don't expect this to print photo quality pictures, but it does a decent job for the price.

The printer freezes if any of the 4 toner cartridges are either empty or beyond their rated life (even if with toner). Free tech support (LONG hold, then not much help, and hoops to jump through to leave comments for consideration) says nothing can be done. I print almost all B&W, but on Mac OS X I couldn't easily set a default B&W so some were printing as colour. The cost and hassle isn't worth it. There is no way of continuing to print (power off/on will lose some print jobs, and will allow a true B&W or two to come out), no easy way to reset the toner flags by hand (I tried the tape over the windows trick from the web, tech support suggested nothing though), and no joy. If you are doing a LOT of colour printing, or have a large budget, this may be for you. I suspect it will be a false economy though.

I purchased a Brother HL-4070cdw to use wirelessly in a mixed apple and pc environment. I am a very experienced user.

The image quality and color accuracy are quite good. I like the print cartridges and the paper tray because I do not have to refill them that offen. However, I have experieced unacceptable installation problems, network problems and the annoying habit of my wirelessly connected PC to reboot when I issue a print command to the Brother HL-4070cdw and only to the Brother HL-4070cdw.

1. At first, I connected my PC by USB. When I issued a print command, the PC rebooted. I called support. They told me that the problem was my electrical circuit was overloaded. I connected my PC into its very own receptecle. The monitor and external hard drive were in another receptecle and I moved the printer twenty feet away to the other side of the office. The first four times I printed everything was fine. Since then, on an intermitent basis, the print command causes a reboot. It does not happen with any other printer. The office is only a few years old and there is no other demand on the circuit. The support organization was unhelpful and had no script to handle the problem so they became agitated. I was far from pleased.
2. I have never been able to connect by Apple wirelessly. Everytime I think I have it figured out, it fails. I finally connected with a USB cable. It never reboots even though I have five or six accessories on the same circuit. It may be that I do not understand the instructions, so I asked the professional that comes into the office to figure it out. He gave up as well. He billed me for four hours work, however.
Life is not perfect. I usually use a different printer from the PC. Once in a while I forget and it works and I give a little prayer of thanks. Often, the PC reboots and I become frustrated again as I did about fifteen minutes ago. One thing, altho the PC goes into reboot, the job gets printed.

Set up was easy and, this model is a good value. The printer jams when duplex-printing on heavier weight paper. Printing on one side works okay.
