Purchasing any dell product is worst mistake in your life. I bought dell Inspiron 6000, and had to call countless times during past 3 years. After 3 years I had to pay 390 $ for hardware warranty support, because I knew it would spoil as usual.

Each call to customer support takes very long time and its waste of time and money.
The dell technical support, customer support is worst. If you are thinking of laptops purchase any laptops other than dell, because I am having worst experience with dell laptop and don't want this laptop even for my enemy.

Dell is the best computer I have ever used. I have read many of the reviews in this site. The negative ones actually show lack of knowledge.
Most of the problems appear to exist in the chair.
I have the Inspirion 1600, have had it for over two years and zero problems. I came on line today to purchase the laptop 6400 for my college student. Normally I don't write reviews but these pot shots at Dell got me. My advise is, if you know something about computers, BUY a DELL!

- i Heart my Dell Inspiron 6400
the case is just beautiful i have had mine for a year now. I have had zero problems with it besides the dvd rom going out but dell replaced it with a DVD burner.. so i dont really see that as a bad thing. To use this computer to the fullest though you do need to upgrade it mine is a 1.83ghz dual core with 677 bus i only have a 60gp hard drive in it but it is a 7200RPM so its fast. I took the liberity of upgrading from 1gig of ram to 2gigs and wow now it pretty much owns. Dells are a great value for the price. But i would say you do want to upgrade to the 2 gigs of ram if you plan on using Vista at all.. but vista sucks so i wouldnt bother. you people who have issues with Dell just must not know how to use a computer? lol i have owned 8 diffrent dells and none of them have had any of these problems everyone is talking about. I would say if you are not very good with computers and you need your hand held... get a mac they will babysit you all day :)

I've had Dell Laptops since they began making them a long while ago. I will only buy a Dell. Any cosmetic problem or any complaint; I've sent it back and they've fixed it for free. Four laptops and maybe three trips during those years to repair (twice for cosmetic keyboard issues). I think most of the problems some of these reviewers had are user problems. A little knowledge can be dangerous. I think they have a 'little' knowledge. My last laptop was a 8100, before that a 1100, and can't remember the oldest one. I also use a C600 on which I use exclusively to record Duplicate Bridge scores.
My new laptop will be 6400.

I've had my Inspiron for over a year now and I have to say that I couldn't be less satisified if I had purchased an empty box from Dell. It runs VERY slow even though I've added a gig of RAM, the autoplay box pops up every few minutes for no reason, and the batter life lasts about as long as the flavor in a stick of chewing gum. Granted, my Inspiron is a 1300, not a 6400, but I've not heard anything positive about any of the Insprion models.

Let me put it this way: I've never written a bad review of anything on Amazon, but this piece of garbage finally made me mad enough to break my own positive-ratings habit.
