- Has worked fairly well for me
I purchased my Dell Inspiron 6400 last year. To this point, it has worked reasonably well. Observations?

First, it has been pretty dependable. I have had no real problems with its ordinary, day-to-day operations.

Second, it is fairly light and quite portable, when I take it with me to conferences or meetings or even vacations (have to keep up with work, after all!).

Third, there are relatively few occasions when the computer malfunctions (e.g., freezes up).

So, in the end, I'm a pretty satisfied customer, although I acknowledge some of those irritating issues.

- Dell's products are now garbage
I've been buying dell's for years, but that's going to end. My Inspiron laptop (as well as my last 2 desktop purchases) has been nothing but a huge headache. I've had multiple hardware problems including a hard drive that died, a broekn DVD drive, and stress cracks in the case. And dealing with Dell support, which used to be such a pleasure, is now a nightmare. Expect hours on hold, calls getting disconnected, and technicians who are more interested in saving the company a few dollars rather than honoring their warranty.

I have owned a Dell Inspiron 6400 for a year and 7 months. It is the Core Duo processor that has a gig of ram, 80gig 7200 hard drive, DVD burner, upgraded screen, Intel Pro wireless, bluetooth and 1 year warranty. I will probably not buy Dell again because the hard drive just went bad and it was out of warranty. After spending over a thousand dollars on a laptop I expect the hard drive to last longer than a year and a half, this is just ridiculous. Not to mention my shift key on the right side no longer works even after dissembling the key and cleaning it. Ok, if the drive or keyboard goes bad they should be replaced free of charge. Must I spend hundreds more on a warranty to ensure reasonable service expected from the components. This laptop is basically used as a desktop and is not moved around much at all. I am very well versed in the knowledge of computers and it is not due to user error. Other than this Dell laptop I normally do not buy ready made computers. I usually buy the motherboard, chip, box and but them together myself, I am no novice. With that I would like to say; that Dell needs to either support their hardware better or supply their product with better hardware when initially built. The Seagate hard drive they supplied with my laptop sucks. OK, hardware does occasionally fail. I get that, no problem...fix it. The concept is similar the cars I buy. I buy a car that I feel has quality and will last. I don't want a warranty with a poorly built car so I can bring it back to the shop all the time and be so thrilled that it is under warranty, no thanks. I simply want the failures to be held down to a minimum to none at all. Companies that feel you have gotten a poorly made or defective product will replace the product even slightly out of warranty. I have experienced this courtesy in the past with electronics and cars. When you buy a higher priced item quality is key. The Dell laptop is basically a good machine but Dell is too cheap with items such as hard drives and keyboards hence the end of my purchasing a Dell product in the future.

Watch out for Dells customer service. Its really the worst. I have spent 6 phone calls, and about 4.5 hours on the phone with them, still not resolving my issue. After being promised to be called back multiple times, due to the time issue, still no calls. They have sent the wrong part to me 3 times (dont ask me how) All I wish is that I bought the HP or Sony. I dont know how Dell has gotten so big, with the poor quality, and poorer customer service.

Rating:

- 4Gb in a laptop is awsome!!!!
If you buy two of this your laptop could have 4Gb.
I said "could" cause 32bit as Windows XP can manage total memory of 4Gb.
If you have a video card that has 512Mb, then, despite you get 4Gb RAM, your computer will be able to manage only 3,5Gb.
It's worsty than you thinking now.
You have the video card, mother board, etc...
I've bought 4Gb and my Windows XP (Toshiba P105-S921) only can manage 3Gb.
It's good anyway!!! :)
The price is very good by now (6/8/2007).
