- Nice new features, but it is slow
I've been using Microsoft Excel since 1988 (Mac version) and have used every Windows version of Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) since 1993. I purchased Office 2007 Pro for a class I'm taking rather than for work where we still use 2003.

Like anything new, it takes time to learn what has changed. Each time I see something new, I think "what was wrong with the old way?" then I try it once or twice and think "man wish I had had that when..."

Negatives:

SLOW!!!!!! I have found 2007 to be very, very SLOW. And I'm using a P4 3Ghz with 1GB RAM and Windows XP -- which should be plenty for an office app. I would say Outlook is the worst, just changing from the inbox to sent items can take almost a minute. Also, when browsing from within the Save As or Open windows, is horrible -- maybe if I had Vista it would be different, but in XP I get a scrolling green/white bar while it thinks about the new folder, then it freezes for 30 seconds, then I get the folder I wanted -- change to another folder and it goes through its thinking process all over again.

Where did it go? They have totally reworked the menu bar. The Edit menu is gone, and the things that used to be in it are spread across multiple menus. The toolbars as you know it are gone too, they change as you select different menus. Makes for a lot of bouncing around to get things done.

Positives:

They have added some nifty features that make what used to be four or five separate steps into one. Styles in Work are much easier, as are citations, end notes, and footnotes (for students THIS IS HUGE). I wrote a term paper last semester with 2003, if I had had 2007 it could have saved me over 15 hours or work in formatting alone.

In Excel, the Formulas menu and toolbar is great. If you work a lot with formulas, but not so much as to have them memorized, this is a great addition.

If you do a lot of data analysis, especially with data cubes from MS SQL 2007, then you have to have Excel 2007.

It's really very simple. Microsoft is changing Office for change's sake. The last version did everything I needed it to. Now, with their new interface, I have to hunt to do something as simple as justifying my margins. It has not improved my life, and it has decreased my productivity. Of course, our IT guys think I'm a Luddite for not wanting the latest and greatest, but this is clearly an example of more being less. The Emperor is naked.

Rating:

- Easy install and some nice add-ons - but no compelling reason to update
1. the packaging. Probably the worst software packaging yet devised. Don't assume you wont be breaking it open to get the discs out. You just might have to.

2. the install. Fast and easy as an upgrade. Approximately five minutes from start to finish. One reboot. No glitches.

3. new functionality. The ribbon menu at the top of the screen is nice. But it's all a bit so-what.

4. should you upgrade? If you can afford it, and want some of the new menu functionality, then it's a nice upgrade. If you are happy with Office 2003, and don't care about easy-access menus, then don't bother.

I had to purchase a new copy of Microsoft Office Professional (my old PC died and took all of the details of my prior version with it) and found that Amazon.com offered the best price, quickest delivery and, as always, is a reliable vendor.

As to the 2007 version of the suite of Microsoft programs, I am still learning where everything is at. There are a few things I like on the new Excel that now can be done in one click, but having to go to different tabs for different functions is a pain. I am moving links from inside the office button to the quick access toolbar - why Microsoft didn't just leave everything on the quick access toolbar is a puzzlement. Probably some former Apple employee working for Microsoft now.
