Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - VISTA WOES (AND LATER, HURRAHS)
I STILL CANNOT GET THE DARN THING TO ACTIVATE ITS LICENSE ON A NEW COMPUTER I BUILT. HOURS AND HOURS ON TECH SUPPORT WITH MICROSOFT, SENDING THEM DIAGNOSTIC FILES AND INFORMATION, THEY CAN'T SEEM TO GET THE LICENSE ACTIVATED EITHER. I INSTALLED A SLIPSTREAMED VERSION OF XP PRO WITH SP2 ON A SECOND HARD DRIVE IN THE NEW COMPUTER, AND IT WORKS JUST FINE. IT'S BECOME SORT OF A HOOT NOW BECAUSE MICROSOFT TECH SUPPORT CALLS ME TWICE A WEEK WITH YET ANOTHER HOPEFUL FIX, WHICH HASN'T PANNED OUT SO FAR. 5 STARS TO MICROSOFT FOR AT LEAST TRYING TO HELP, ONE STAR TO VISTA ONLY BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH I CAN'T USE IT UNTIL ACTIVATION, IT DOES LOOK COOL ON THE MONITOR.

UPDATE - THE WHOLE PROBLEM WAS THAT VISTA DOES NOT SEE 4 GIG OF RAM WITHOUT SP1 INSTALLED. SO, I PUT IN 2 GIG, AND ALL WAS OK. MONTHS LATER, I REALLY LIKE VISTA. IT IS EXTREMELY PROTECTIVE OF ITSELF FROM ERRANT PROGRAMS, AND I LIKE THAT. NOW THAT SP1 IS INSTALLED, I PUT IN THE REMAINING 2 GIG, FOR A TOTAL OF FOUR GIG OF RAM, AND ALL IS RUNNING SMOOTHLY STILL. FIVE STARS TO VISTA, ONE STAR TO SUPPORT BECAUSE THE ANSWER WAS RIGHT ON THE MICROSOFT KNOWLEDGE SERVERS, AND MS SUPPORT MUST NEVER CHECK THERE FOR ANSWERS!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Waste of Money
This isn't so much a NEW operating system from Microsoft as a mildly updated version of Windows XP. If you think of Vista as XP "Service Pack 3", you will be satisfied. If you are expecting anything new or improved (except for the copied Apple eye candy), forget it. Microsoft's activation scheme is frustrating and bug-prone as ever -- a total waste of their time and yours.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent OS..once you tame it!
First off, I have been using Windows Vista Ultimate since RC2 and I have to say that I LOVE it. I recently bought my first 8800GTX DX10 card and IT IS AMAZING!

Sure there are issues with Vista but remember XP? There were the exact same issues and look where that stands now. You will never experience DX10 if you do not upgrade..

If you buy and install Vista Ultimate but don't like some of the features or something is not working right, research it...fix it...don't just complain!! Nothing is 100% satisfactory to some people so, less complaining and, if you have a problem with this OS or Microsoft in general, then go to Mac or Linux (guaranteed that you will not be able to run much of anything on them). Have fun and BUY IT!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - nice new features but not stable
There are a lot of new features in Windows Vista Ultimate that I like, and after I purchased a new convertible notebook with it installed and solved some early glitches (incompatible software) it ran pretty well. But after only a few months it started crashing almost daily, and now it crashes several times per day. Sometimes it's a blue sreen, sometimes it freezes up, sometimes it just randomly reboots. The product was relased prematurely; it is not robust, nor as stable as Windows XP and Windows 2000. I am considering doing a clean install of Windows XP, which will be a hassle and will force me to give up some of the nice features of Vista like the Photo Gallery. But I would rather have a stable system.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Love It!
I really like Vista. I run Vista 64 on my laptop and my wife has Vista Home Premium on her laptop which she likes too. I have been using computers since the days of the huge floppy disks. I'm not a expert, but I have some experience.

My experience with Vista has been good. I had to buy a new printer because my HP printer I bought in 2002 was not compatable with Vista. So I bought a new HP printer which does much more than my old one at half the price. Be prepared by going to microsoft's web site and find what is compatable with Vista. Doing so will do away with frustration and headaches.

Vista is a stable OS. I run Tuneup 2007 on both computers which keeps them running like new.

There are a lot of pop ups which ask you what you want to do. Why? The why is because Microsoft developed a simple proactive means to help guard your computer from virus', trojans, worms, diarhea, etc. It keeps you informed by asking you if what the computer is doing is really what you are telling it to do. It asks you so you are informed so little beasties have compromised your system and currently doing nasty things to your computer. This is a huge proactive success for Microsoft.

Vista has not been that difficult to learn. Most elderly people I know (I'm 50, by the way) don't want to learn anything about computers. Those who do take classes to learn how to use them. The excuse whether Uncle Fester will be able to use Vista is lame. He's as bright as a light bulb and it won't take anytime to learn Vista at a local community college.

Don't be fooled by the nay sayers. Vista is an excellent operating system that is not prone to crashes, freeze ups, of other things of the sort. Not that it is bullet proof, but my experience has been very positive.

My advice is to do your own homework on this new OS and get the facts yourself. When you purchase a new computer or upgrade to Vista, get a good utilities program to keep your computer healthy. I use Tuneup 2007 and it does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Buy a computer that has Vista installed from the factory. Buy a good anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-younameit. I use Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0, but most of the security software on the market will do.

11/07/07 I have been running Vista long enough to get a good feel for the program. I still think this OS is one of the best yet. My machines are more stable, faster, and is more secure. Don't listen to the Whiners. When I was in the Marines one of my drill instructers made a remark that I have observed time after time. It is the 10% rule. In everygroup there are at least 10% who will whine, complain, and just be thorns for the rest of us.
