- Two defective 660s in less than a week!
Ordered the Garmin 660 after research and reading many reviews to upgrade from my old reliable IQue. The first one came with a broken car adapter. Amazon had me send it back (at their expense), and the replacement came within two days. Unfortunately, the new one's screen froze intermittently, and when it wasn't frozen, the touch screen input thought that a 6 was a 2 or a 4 or anything other than the unlock code I was trying to enter. I am returning the second one, and won't try this model again. Flimsy materials on the car adapter, and touch screen problems make the long range reliability unacceptably risky.

Found this GPS easy to use on first trip! Didn't spend much time at all learning the menu and navigating through all the available information it provides. Easy to mount on windshield with included suction mount. The screen is big enough to see clearly even if mounted on passenger side of vehicle. Has a day or night screen setting that is very helpful. We found most helpful the voice announcement of "keep left or keep right" and countdown in miles and then feet to a turn. Easily recalculates if you deviate from the original route. This little GPS takes a lot of the stress out of driving on unfamiliar roads!

The Garmin Nuvi 660 is an excellent GPS. The maps are very clear and you voice is easy to recognize what is being said. We use it all over the NY City area including Westchester,Rockland and parts of New Jersey without any problems.
I would recommend it over any other company's GPS!

- Does Everything Except Drive The Car
This device has empowered me. I no longer have to fear getting lost is a strange neighborhood or finding my way back home. Mine came with 2008 maps but I registered on the Garmin site and downloaded the 2009 maps without a problem. I also updated the firmware using Garmin's "WebUpdater." I did have an issue with Garmin's POI loader software "seeing" the Nuvi (strange, since the WebUpdater found it with no problem and I could access the drive through MY Computer), but I just downloaded POIs onto an SD card and that solved that.

It's the perfect size, the volume is great, even the FM Transmitter works great for me and the bluetooth IS worth it. It connects so quick, has great range, and the speaker really is quite good. I tried it through the FM transmitter and that was surprisingly good. Very happy with this model.

I want to add something about the bluetooth, which was one of the major differences between this model and the 650 model I was considering. The bluetooth is great. I use it with my Razr V3, and the minute I power up the device, it connects to my phone and beams my phone book to it. I never have to think about even taking my phone out of my handbag. Very convenient. Surprised me a couple of times when the device was "ringing" and I had not realized it was connected. I don't bother with my bluetooth headset anymore (which always needed to be charged when I needed it) thanks to this unit.

I do have one concern: the plastic frame at the bottom of the screen is slightly bowed and not flush with the screen. It's very slight, but I'm unsure if this is a common defect. It works great, and I've already invested a couple of hours in updated it, so I don't know if it's worth it to get it replaced.

The box, when delivered from Amazon, was not in any shrink-wrap (which may be how they are delivered) and there is a blue sticker on the top with some letters and a bar code. I know Amazon only sells new, but wonder about the sticker. I did call Amazon and was assured they only sell new. Anyone else notice their Nuvi's frame not completely flush with the glass or who remembers their delivery not having any shrink-wrap, please comment.

If you're thinking about buying -- do it. It really is worth it.

Update 10/17/08: After posting at different forums and checking out local stores, I confirmed that the box is NOT delivered in any shrink-wrapped plastic.

Also, others have noticed (after I pointed it out) that the frame is not completely flush with the screen all the way around. I've found various photos on the web showing this also.

I've only used my Nuvi for local trips, but love it. In my area (Putnam County, NY) the FM transmitter works great, so I've grown fond of the MP3 player. I can't imagine driving without this device and my only regret is not having bought one sooner. For some reason, I always associated GPS with a subscription (like the cell phones still have).
