This Nuvi cannot match features that the lowest end TomTom has!
I will just post the conversation I had with Garmin support before I returned the Nuvi 660:
ME: Hello, I got the 660 after having for a few months the low-end TomTom (3rd edition); i am amazed that the Garmin has less GPS functionality than the TomTom; i will give you one example: yesterday i went to my dentist in another town, about 15 miles away. With the TomTom, after it would chose the highway to get me back home quicker, i would ask to "avoid tolls" and it would find the strait route to home, which is slower as it is more of a pleasant, scenic drive. in spite of all my efforts yesterday to get Nuvi to do that (even starting on my own on the straight route), the GPS continued to try to get me back on the highway - to the point that i was completely lost and I HAD to get on the highway and go home. I know the GPS is configured for the fastest route - so was the TomTom. It is a big problem, as it is not the first time it does something like that, making its functionality "for pleasure" very limited. The reason i bought it was not to know how to take a highway, but to, at times, start a sideroad with the certitude that i would have fun and not get lost. Any ideas?

1) From the main menu with Where To?, View Map, and Travel Kit select the Wrench/Tool icon.
2) Select Navigation
3) Select the Enabled Button next to Avoidance.
4) Make sure a checkmark appears next to the items that you'd like to avoid in your navigation.

ME: Unless one is retired and has nothing else to do but to go on sideroads, one would need a GPS that helps both during weekdays and weekends. TomTom would ask you for alternatives, including to avoid tolls. If you set the Garmin to avoid anything it would basically work AGAINST you idiotically avoiding what you setup to avoid. Today I did exactly what you said: set the toll avoidance on and drove toward the tollroad. The low end TomTom would understand at some point that it does not pay to avoid anymore the toll: not your device.
Yours found the most convoluted ways to "go back on track" and avoid the toll. Even AFTER I paid the toll, the thing was trying to get me out of the toll road, even though there were no more tolls to be paid anyway.
I am now convinced that Nuvi 660 has a deficient software and I will try to return it.

There are other nuvi models that will allow you to plan your route before you go to location starting with the nuvi 700-series, such as the nuvi 760 that has very similar features to the one that you have recently purchased.

I found the unit very easy to use and very accurate.When I missed a couple of turns it brought me right back on course.

The 660 works well--- in a car, on a bus, and even in the air. It's a significant improvement over my previous Street Pilot. Have not had time to explore its several added features, but so far I have no complaints.

What a time saver to show short cuts I never knew about. Also great after you set a location when you are there and you want to find it again. I have to learn to trust the way it sends me and not use my normal routes. It is a great device and easy to use for a old folk like me.

This GPS is great! The bluetooth option works perfectly and allows me to talk on the cell phone while driving. I really enjoy using it!
