Software Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred [OLD VERSION]

Domain Name Com's - Software : Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred [OLD VERSION]

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Does not work
The program runs much slower than I type, and once it finally lays down the text, it is full of mistakes. The investment was a total waste of money.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - This review dicated using Dragon NatuallySpeaking
So I'm going to did get this whole review using Dragon NaturallySpeaking without correcting any of my mistakes. I'm disappointed with this product. First of all the product description on Amazon says "use your voice to dictate edit and control applications like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and coal WordPerfect." However after receiving the program I realized that it does not work with Outlook 2007. This was quite a shock considering I use my e-mail program more than any other application on my computer. It turns out you have to purchase Dragon NaturallySpeaking professional version if you want it to work with Outlook but that product costs about $800.

The speech recognition is pretty good, but having to make corrections can slow you down quite a bit and sometimes I wonder if it's really faster than typing by the time you are through.

I'm going to continue to work with the software and train it in the hopes that the accuracy will improve, but I think it's this ghosting that this company would charge an extra $600 to make it work with e-mail programs--probably the most utilized applications on nearly anyone's computer.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - great program except for one thing- the user file
I am a grad student who writes papers all the time. I bought this program 14 months ago after a neck injury which has hampered my typing ability.

All in all, I love the program. Once you have done adequate training the software is very capable and does a decent job until the user file gets too big for its capacity. Once it reaches full capacity the user file dies and you will struggle to recreate a new one without losing all of the training you have done with the software. So far the user file has died on me twice. The first time I was able to saving my voice training, the second time I lost everything.

I can only hope that Nuance realizes this and fixes it before version 10 comes out. If they don't I will be transferring to Microsoft Vista.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A novelty rather than a productivity tool
I bought this thinking I could be more productive will writing lengthy emails or letters. But I can actually type much quicker than this program will recognize my voice.

Unless you speak relatively slowly and speak EXTREMELY clearly, you'll spend more time correcting errors than you will actually getting anything typed out.

It certainly is a cool program, being able to control other programs, switch to different windows, call up a link on a web page, etc., but I just don't see an ability to improve one's productivity with this.

The only benefit I could see is if you are a terrible typist, you are handicapped and have a hard time typing or can't type at all, or you like to think out loud and record your thoughts rather than sit down and type.

If you are proficient in your programs, such as using shortcut keys, knowing how to quickly move between programs, etc., Naturally Speaking will actually slow you down. Just the time it takes to recognize your voice and then get it on the screen is much longer than it would take to simply type it for me. And then if you have to correct something, oh geez. Forget about it. I could retype the entire sentence in the same amount of time it takes just to correct a single word.

PS: The headset that comes with it is junk. Go ahead and get a decent microphone at least.

Here is the same above, but typed out by Naturally Speaking:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Better product, but beware Nuance
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred

Right out of the box this speech recognition is impressively accurate. Much improved over previous versions. Biggest problem is the "churning" of Nuance. They want you to buy each new version that comes out. I owned DNS 5.0 Preferred, my second version, and expected to get a $50.00 rebate. The rebate will qualify only versions 7 and higher, and when you call, they will verbally ok version 6. I should have checked the rebate form before I bought. I phoned Nuance, and they told me to write and complain to Consumer Affairs. I did, and the letter was returned as PO Box nonexistent. I spoke to three agents, (two supervisors), and the last finally said I should fax her my undeliverable letter for forwarding. I have not heard back yet. Very greedy company, IMHO, but they're the only game in town. I would probably advise buying their $99.00 version online, as Nuance says it is the exact same as the box costing me $135.00. I hope they are telling the truth.
