Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very good hockey game!!
I am of the opinion that they haven't made a really good hockey game since NHL hockey for Sega Genesis. Yes, the graphics have gotten better and they have put some cool things into recent games. But the fun factor has diminished since Sega. I'm speaking specifically of the gameplay here and not necessarily the front office side of the game, which is cool. But, to be a truly great hockey game, you need a good balance of realism, graphics, and smoothness. NHL2K7 for XBox360 may not be quite as fun as the old Sega hockey by EA, but it is by far the best hockey game I've played in 8 years.

Pros:
- Great graphics
- Not as many "sweet spots" (Sweet spots are the areas or moves on the ice where you can always score, otherwise known as cheesey)
- Tons of options for drafting, player creation, team creation, etc.
- Better gameplay than previous versions

Cons:
- Still a little whirly-twirly...Guys look like they are doing way too much spinning and whirling.
- You can't customize a season enough. I wanted to create a season with a few of my friends with just games between us. You can't set the number of teams and can't create a custom schedule.
- Saving profiles and settings is way too confusing. It would be nice to have an option where everything Auto-saves....But, right now, you have to save rosters, teams, profiles, settings all separately.
- I'm sort of getting sick of the locked features where you need to accomplish things to unlock teams and stadiums or find cheats. It might be just me, but I'd rather not need to cure cancer in order to play with the 89-90 Bruins.

In closing, this is a very good game. I play it with my buddies a lot. I think we are starting to see a changing of the guard from EA to the 2K series as NHL, NBA, among others are starting to be better games on 2K.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - As close to real hockey as you will ever get...
I've been playing EA's NHL series since NHL 93. In those years I've been continously frustrated with EA's annual releases, which usually involved better graphics, more character animations and little else. The goalies were always easy to score on in certain ways, and getting past the defense was a breeze. In the end it became mindless banter with little feeling of reward when a goal is scored.

I was recently surprised to discover that another company is also making sports games and naturally having a love for hockey I ordered NHL 2K7. After playing around in the customisable Practice Modes for a few minutes, I immediately knew I would never be touching EA's NHL series again...

The pure accuracy, fun and feeling NHL2K7 gave me just from breaking out with a few passes and taking a shot or two on goals, to delivering a realistic bodycheck was wonderful and it felt real.

The sounds are awesome and give you that 'hockey game feeling'. When you hit the goalies pads with a slapshot, that umistakable thump drives you to have another try. The commentary is free flowing and seems very natural, what's also nice is the way the replays are commented on in detail.

The team strategy options are endless that even the most hardened Playstation coaches would scratch their heads over the tactical fine tuning. The 8 on-the-fly coaching calls add another dimension to your tactics. The 'screen the goalie' or 'release forward for breakaway' calls in play are two of my favourite.

Whats especially well done is the default 'Parametric' camera angle, which lets you stay very close down to the action, and know most of the time where your team mates are.

The game settings are endless, so if you feel something is not working the way it should, you can change its frequency or disable it. Settings from changing the frequency of an elbowing penalty, to the frequency of the glass breaking from a slapshot can be modified with a slider.

I consider myself to be a decent player at this game, but for those of you who want a serious challenge, play the Hall of Famer difficulty level. The AI is in your face, aggressive and frustrating, exactly how a hockey game at its best should be. I played this difficulty level and promptly after a few games went down a level.

On the downside I can't think of much. From far away the people sitting in the stands look a bit funny, but the graphics are right up there with EA's NHL and in my opinion look better during gameplay because of the closeness the Parametric camera angle can stay with the action without sacrificing strategy. The fighting is not that great either but I think you need to get used to it to enjoy it more.

If you like mindless childs play and like to score one way every time, buy EA Sports NHL. If you want a real hockey game that presents a real different challenge every time you lace up, I would only recommend this game.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Pretty Good
This is a pretty game. I'll start with a list of the things that bother me first.

1. All the indie music gets old really quickly. Fortunately it can be turned off during gameplay but I wish I could turn it off when I'm in the menu too. If you can, I haven't found it yet.

2. Excessive checking. Even using the sliders it is still difficult to try to deke around defensemen.

3. Boring celebration cut scenes after every goal (or booing depending on which stadium you're at). The rendering of the fans is monotonous and not very lifelike. Fortunately the scenes can be skipped but it would be nice if the losing players would forego a celebration after a goal when they're still down by 5 goals.

4. The controls are a bit confusing because there are so many options you can do when you're on offense with the puck, offense without the puck, defense, goalie, goalie with puck. Of course, if you can master the controls or at least halfway learn them this would then become valuable so this is also a feature I like.

That being said, a few other things I like are the lifelike feel of playing the game. It still feels like a video game but the fluidity of the players is pretty impressive sometimes. Dekes and goalie dekes are also a nice feature. Combine those with the one-timers and you'll have a strong chance of winning some games if you learn a few other basic maneuvers.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent effort and great strides forward
I can't believe it's happened again... even after I said I wasn't going to do it - I've gone out and purchased NHL 2K7 after buying NHL 07. Now, after before anyone here thinks I'm going to glorify 2K and put down the EA series I must step in and say both titles definitely have their shortcomings. This year EA has come out with a huge innovation with their new (and well received) Skill Stick control scheme. I love every goal I've ever scored in that game. I'll be honest and let you know that is what kept me coming back game after game to finish an entire season. After my season though, that's where I was utterly disappointed and very upset with EA's lack of effort regarding their franchise mode depth and the completely lackluster (read: terrible) Stanley Cup celebration that took place as my team won. I found myself wanting more. In fact, I wanted so much more that I decided to take a chance and spend another chunk of my hard earned cash on 2K's yearly offering.

Now that I've laid the groundwork for the 2K glorification I'd like to say a few pessimistic things first to offset those positive attributes I will mention. This game does feel largely like 2K6. But, for those of us who have played 2K hockey year after year beginning with the Dreamcast version, we know this is a formula that was never broken to start with. It's merely been polished into the current form, which to me is very enjoyable as a hockey fan and gamer. While the goalie animations are far from realistic NHL net minders, they still get their point across. They are awkward and stiff at times and then completely unnecessary at times (when a goalie dives 5 feet to his left or right to stop a puck that would have gone wide in the first place). And let's be honest with each other - 2K needs a new commentary team because these guys are somewhat annoying to listen to for any length of time. The checking in this game can also be summarized as a bit on the ridiculous side but can be turned down via sliders in the options, gameplay menu.

These minor complaints aside, 2K7 really did impress me this year. Their depth in franchise mode from assigning practices for individual players, roster movement, contract signings, salary cap, an entire minor league system, scouting, a complete coaching staff... the list goes on and on. For the simple hockey fan, don't fret - there are many set and forget settings so you can just pick up and play. I just enjoy that someone actually pays attention to what die hard gamer and fans want in their games, not just put out a bare bones game like... well the competition. Granted, 07 is in their first year of development, it's a shame they couldn't do more considering they actually took a year off - giving them nearly two years of development time. The only other thing 07 had was two way contracts. Everyone say "oooooh" and "ahhhh". Big deal. Because of the two way contract, my team has glitched a few players to free agency causing my starting goaltender to be lost forever. Thanks for that addition 07. While 2K doesn't have this contract feature they do implement the salary cap and contract negotiations that are pretty realistic. As for gameplay and control you have to give kudos where kudos are due to the team for completely overhauling the skating engine. The players move more realistic than ever and give you an actual sense of movement on ice in relation to players real weight and height. And, as always, controlling players is a breeze if you're used to any other 2K hockey game where there are many options and schemes for advanced and rookie gamers alike. Last, I'd like to say I think their new camera angle is the greatest change to the visual aspect of the game since.. well.. ever - considering no game has ever really offered new camera angles. It gives you the greatest view of the ice while letting you set up any play.

While both games have their ups and downs - I think it's safe to say I'll be sticking with 2K7 this year after thoroughly playing 07. EA has put their best effort forth and deserves recognition for their achievement but ultimately comes up short when it comes to 2K7's vast gameplay options and depth. With a deep franchise, tournament and party games we've all come to love - NHL 2K7 is a game that will keep you and your friends entertained for many nights to come... and long after this NHL season has come to an end.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - It's more like a 3.75
I am getting a little too old for video games so this is a perfect game for me -- just turn it on, pick random teams and play. The gameplay, camera angles and such are just easy enough to pick up and play. If you don't want to invest tons of time into a game, this is perfect for you.
