- Run XP on Mac
As a software developer, there are many advantages to use a mac as a `windows' development platform such as, the entire virtual xp machine is contained in two files, where you can make a copy of and in case your xp box crashes beyond repair, you can simply copy the files back in an start with a clear slate. This Virtual PC runs in full speed, so you won't have to deal with the slowed down version of your applications.

Integration of XP applications are very seamless as using Mac's file manager, you can click on a file that is linked to an xp application, and poof, a copy of xp starts up and the appropriate application comes up with the file you clicked on.

There were a few times where opening up an XP box seemed to lock up the system (leave it to XP to lock up the Mac!!), but once the application timed out I was able to `force quite' the application and start over.

It also seems like even though Mac has a core-duo CPU, only on CPU is available for the virtual XP environment. Although I'm sure the other CPU is running back-end caching as XP seems to run very fast on my macbook pro.

Here are some applications I've tested on mac using Parallels:
- Visual Studio 2005 and 2008
- SQL Server 2000 and 2005
- Visio
- IIS
- IE7 (was able to log into Netflix and watch a movie)
- Used a SanDisk cruzer (this memory stick has xp applications so make sure to bring up XP before inserting the cruzer)

If you're looking to buy a new system and don't want to get stuck with Vista's sluggish performance, don't think twice. Mac is the way to go and using Parallels you can have the best of both worlds.

Overall I am quite happy with this product. It installed easily with no fuss what so ever. I am using this with Windows Vista Business edition. It is somewhat slow to boot, but is probably due to the amount of memory I have in my Mini which is 1 gb. If you use the Windows side of this more frequently than OS X, just let it "sleep" in this mode. I have found that not all Windows software will load with this package. Ulead Movie Factory 6, and Audio Magix would not work. All the usual Microsoft suspects such as Office, Money, Visio, Project etc, run fine. I can't seem to utilize some of the Mac's built-in features such as the bluetooth, or firewire port, but maybe they will be fine in time. A worthwhile product for the money!

I ordered Parallels after first using VMWare Fusion. While Fusion was stable for me on an Intel iMac 2.4GHz, it didn't feel like there was really well thought-out integration between the two OS's.

After installing and using Parallels, I would not recommend the current version of Fusion to anyone who needs seamless access to both Windows & Mac programs in real-time. The single most compelling feature of Parallels (that Fusion lacks) is called SmartSelect. It allows you to assign either a Windows or Mac program to any file type. So, if you use Apple Mail and receive a .exe file, it will open in Windows. If you use Outlook Express and receive a .pdf file, you can have it open in Preview (on the Mac side).

What Parallels claims is true... you really can use the best program for the job, regardless if it's Mac or Windows. SmartSelect makes this possible.

This product does everything that it says that it will do. I purchased it for the very few XP programs that I need on my MAC. I only use it once or twice a week, but it works when I need it.
