Software Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac [OLD VERSION]

Domain Name Com's - Software : Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac [OLD VERSION]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Love the Mac OS integration, not the stability or performance
Bought a used MacBook Pro (2.16GHz Core 2 Duo) recently, but still needed access to Windows applications due to work obligations. Gave both Parallels Desktop 3.0 and VMware Fusion a try. I immediately loved the tight integration between Parallels Desktop and Mac OS. Nice to be able to configure Windows applications (e.g. MS Office) to open Mac files. Moving files back and forth between Windows and Mac OS was a breeze!

Unfortunately, I found the performance under Mac OS X 10.5 on a machine with 1GB of RAM was rather disappointing. Despite the positive reviews I've read, I found both Mac and Windows applications to be decidedly sluggish. Looking at the Activity Monitor seems to hint at the problem: to operate a virtual machine with 512MB of memory, Parallels appears to grab 200-300MB more RAM than Fusion. Adding an additional 2GB of RAM to the machine seemed to help with this problem. Based on this experience, I'll suggest that 2GB is the minimum memory configuration that makes sense to use with Parallels Desktop and Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard. If your machine only has 1GB of RAM, you may find that Fusion provides better response than Parallels.

In addition to the performance problems, I also ran into a number of stabilty problems while attempting to install Windows XP Pro. I had to attempt the OS install multiple times before I ended up with a successfully configured virtual machine. The install locked up while trying to read the install CD the first time I tried to install, then threw an exception and quit the second time. VMware Fusion didn't seem to have any problems installing from the same media. On the third try, Windows XP installed successfully and I haven't had any stability-related problems since.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - very good until a problem occurs
Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac (Intel Mac) I have a Macbook with Parallels and Windows XP. The biggest use is to access the internet. Occasionally, the internet is lost. This has happened twice (for two to three days each time) in about two months. Apple will not respond to it, because it is not their software. I've sent email to the Parallels company. They made no response. Calls to the company got me nowhere. When I registered my program, I didn't get a confirmation on registering the software. If the program don't work, it's a problem with no good answer. And I know some other people have had the same type problems accessing the internet.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Careful
I had real difficulty running this product until their tech support (very good, by the way) told me to download an updated version. Since then it has been a real workhorse. I just wish I knew how to have it "see" the numeric keypad on my iMac keyboard, but maybe it's just a setup issue that I don't know about. When it's up and running, a five-star rating comes to mind.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Worth the Price
It's great software for Intel Mac users who would like to install Windows software (which Amazon also sells) onto their computers. Great value for the price.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great tool; doesn't play well with Boot Camp
I bought Parallels 3.0 in Feb 2008. Installation isn't exactly intuitive, but was trouble free. I already had Windows in a Boot Camp partition; Parallels recognized that and created a virtual machine with essentially no input from me.
Using Windows programs via Parallels is a little slow (and I have a new Mac w/ 2GB of RAM), but it's fine for non-gaming needs. If you sometimes need more speed, you can still use Boot Camp to run Windows in native mode, even after installing Parallels.
I love my Mac, but I sometimes need to use Windows programs. Parallels is an elegant solution for my needs -- highly recommended.

UPDATE (Nov 2008): After a few months running Parallels via a Boot Camp partition, the program just quit working and couldn't be fixed, despite many efforts and much on-line research. I finally killed my Boot Camp partition and just loaded Parallels and Windows directly. So far, so good after a few months -- and MUCH easier to use and maintain. Unless you need to run Windows natively, my advice is to skip Boot Camp and just use Parallels.
