Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion

Domain Name Com's - : Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great for the placid explorer, highly open ended
The best thing about Oblivion is its open ended nature. The worst thing about Oblivion is its open ended nature. I've been playing the game on and off for months and months without making much progress. Instead of worrying about moving forward through the quests I've just casually explored the massive world that is Oblivion. Nevertheless I am enjoying myself.

Graphics are top-notch on my 47" Samsung LCD at 720p. The world itself is beautifully rendered. Character development is about what an old-time RPGer like me would expect - enjoyable and pretty standard. The variety of characters that can be developed is well rounded but I don't think Oblivion will have a high replay value. Luckily I have an expansion pack waiting.

This game is perfect for the patient, methodical gamer who loves fantasy and progressive character development. There are lots of texts to read and a real system and logic to how you develop as you move through the game. Oblivion is probably not a good choice for the ADD/ADHD 30-second attention span types.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Incredible
This is by far the best video game I have ever played, period. Normally I can't stand the fantasy genre or role playing games of any kind but this game is phenomenal. There is so much to do and see in this game, you really are fully immersed in it. I played my first character for about 130 hours before I finished all the missions and wanted to keep playing. The graphics, sound, atmosphere is all awesome. You will feel like you need a secretary to manage all the different quests, but thats not a bad thing. My only complaint is that Nights of the Nine just didn't fit well with the main game, but thats it. I havn't played Shivering Isles. Have a little patience with the beggining and developing the character. Once you step out of the sewers the game truly begins. Even if you think games like World of Warcraft are stupid (which I do) give this game a shot.It really is a lot of fun.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not the typical xbox splatterfest
I've only had my xbox360 for a few months now, but I'm already a little discouraged when I read game reviews in magazines that determine if a game is good or not by how much blood and gore there is. I'm also a little disappointed in the available titles for kids.

What does that have to do with Oblivion? I must set my focus so you know where I'm coming from. I'm middle aged and grew up with paper/pencil RPGs. I like games that have a lot to them, and I'd like my kids to have some fun games to play.

Oblivion is a RPG. Plain and simple.

Some reviews claim it is too complex...well, compared to some xbox titles i've seen that is true. Compared to your typical PC RPG it is right on par.

Some say it is big and boring. It is big, that is for sure. They crammed a lot into this game. Boring? Not for me. I found myself being lulled into a bit of boredom, and then *whack* something would happen to bring the game back into focus.

Some say the NPCs "suck". Yeah, I concede that. This is a typical Morrowind game where the NPCs have some little story and you get to choose one of several responses. It doesn't really matter which ones you choose because you will want to choose them all to make sure you didn't miss something. I found myself not even reading or listening to their talk...I just clicked through it to see if a quest appeared.

Terrain is something that is both impressive and a little silly. I loved the way the terrain looked, the contours, and elevations. Many times I'd get to the top of a mountain and just watch the view for a while. On the other hand, there are plants all over and I found myself thinking that they took all the plants out of a landscaping software package and through them in.

The one aspect of the game that was most annoying deals with theft. If you steal something you end up with a bounty on you almost instantly and regardless where you go the whole world knows you are a crook. I stole a horse and rode it across the map and then ditched it. Went to a city and was immediately attacked by the guards. Worse, when you go to click on someone to talk to them if you aren't positioned right you might steal something instead of talk...and it is off to jail with you!

Even with the problems (which included locking up my system a couple of times) this game is big, it is an RPG, and it is cheap. Given the current titles on the xbox360, this is a winning combination for anyone who loves games that spent more time on the game and less on blood and guts graphics.

Highly recommended.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - As one reviewer mentioned, it is TOO COMPLEX and I certainly agree
When I purchased my XBox 360 I searched Amazon for the best review on all the games at the time. Oblivion stood out as a must have game. So I had to get it. I like role-playing games but this is the first time Ive played one since the Playstation 1 days. How this game plays out to me is nearly impossible. It would take weeks to actually understand the game and how to pull out its full potential. But lets play the game without reading the manual (wont happen). It took me a couple hours to create my character. You have to think whether you should be this race or that race, what class you should be, how dark his skin, how long his nose, how thick his beard, what color his hair, how pointy his ears, the color of his eyes, the thickness of his face, etc, etc, etc. And so you finally know what you want to be. Now you're playing the game. The game has so many controls that you HAVE to read the manual to understand exactly how your inventory works. Cause the inventory is full of symbols and you need to know these symbols by heart. As you play the early game, you collect rat meat and bones. OK so what is the purpose of these? Will I need them? Eventually you will get encumbered so because their value is worth 1 gold, you must drop them. And so as you're gathering treasures, eventually you'll have to spend a lot of time going through your inventory wondering what you should drop. Keeping the most valuable not necessarily the most useful cause you dont know what you need yet! And you dont know if what you drop you'll need later! So you just want this game to pick up. It has great reviews, people love it and supposedly had a good time with it but Im stuck here wondering what these things do. Very frustrating if you ask me. Eventually you'll be asked what kind of star sign do you want to be? And this is when I quit the game, it was the very start of the game. And it gives you about a dozen constellations and a description of each. Oh great so now I have to read each and every one of these signs and their uses. Lets see I can become invisible for 1 hour a day, or I can give added strength to my character. Which one is better!! Thats the problem, you dont know. You just started the game and collected small "treasures". Trying to understand the purpose of walking around killing things and collecting a few gold. But i spent hours reading the manual only to forget a few days later when I picked up the paddle again. So it was just very complex, you need a Role-Playing degree to play this game. Its not like Halo where you can turn the game on, pick up the paddle and go on an adventure killing things! Sorry for rambling on but this game isnt something you want to play if you dont have the time to play it. Halo was the first game I played for 360 and playing it a couple hours a day was awesome. I had surround subwoofers laying on the couch at night and it was amazing. Try it with Oblivion and you have to turn on the light to read the manual, spend the entire 2 hours trying to understand it. Then forget how to play the next day. Its just not a game for everybody I guess.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A triumph of quantity over quality
I had very high hopes purchasing this game for my Xbox 360 - being a big RPG fan and having played Morrowind and enjoying it I thought I could'nt go wrong.
Now, 50+ hours of gamplay later I find myself more frustrated with the game than actually enjoying it. It simply does not live up to the hype (94 out of 100 metacritic score ? Ridiculous!)

The biggest problem is the scaled levelling system, which means that your character basically does not improve his skills. Fighting goblins is as hard after 50 hours of gameplay as it was when you began the game.
No doubt this has been made because of the non-linear gameplay - a character has to be able to go anywhere and fight anyone no matter which level he is on. But it completely destroys the idea of having a level system at all. Bethesda could have chosen a more GTA-esque approach, creating an action game instead of an RPG. In my opinion the whole idea of RPG is destroyed if you make a levelling system this way. If you enjoy building a character, being able to fight bigger and meaner enemies along the way, this is not a game for you.

Secondly I find the story kind of boring. Bethesda advertised Oblivion as being a new approach to the RPG genre, an interactive universe. Personally I find the NPC's boring, mostly they only have two or three lines, and if they - which they seldom do - have a quest for you it is your basic "go this place and fetch me that thing". In reward they'll give you money you have absolutely no use for. If you want weapons, armour or magical intems, the only way to get them is to win them in battle. The shops have NOTHING.

Finally, the game is way too big. After pillaging ten caves, forts or mines, they all look like each other. Whats the idea of having a million places to go that all look and feel similar ?? More enrgy should have been put into creating a DIVERSE universe with fewer NPC's with more personality.

Just so that you know where I'm coming from - I find the best RPG-experience I have ever had to be Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2 - a game that has everything Oblivion lacks.
A proof that next-generation does not always mean improvement.
