Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion

Domain Name Com's - : Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great game, great value.
I have played Oblivion on both the PC and XBOX 360, and the 360 version blows the other away.

The controls work effortlessly. Even though it was designed as a computer game first, then released on 360, it seems as though the controls were designed for a game controller. It is much easier and more efficient to play with the 360's controller.

Graphically, the game is amazing. If you have your 360 hooked up to a true HD TV, buy a hat and get ready to hold on to it! It is still one of the best looking games out there. What's more, I have experienced no drops in frame rate at all while playing the game. It always runs quite smoothly, allowing one to stay immersed in the experience. It is possible to play in either first- or third-person view, but I would definitely recommend first-person. Magic is hard to target in third-person view and I didn't get the same feeling of 'being there' as in first-person mode.

Two final things:

1) Downloading extra content is a breeze over XBOX Live. There are a couple of add-ons (one that adds spell tomes to loot in dungeons and elsewhere which teach you spells) that I felt really enhanced the game.

2) The game is now out on the Platinum Hits line for the 360. I believe it was $25 or $30, and it is worth every penny of that, and more.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Not a fan
Of course this is my review, my opinion. This game pisses me off because it's obviously high regarded and loved by all, yet I cant find out why. Gamespot gave it a 9.5. I can't seem to figure out what I'm missing. Just sheer size, mass and freedom of a game does not make it fun to play (to me). You will walk around this huge world and encounter only a handful of enemies, all very weak. The enemies difficulties do not seem to change depending on where you are on the map either. You can investigate caves, but there are only a few weak enemies in them, very little treasure, and nothing exciting happens, ever! The battle controls are clunky, he seems to swing the sword so slow and delayed. You can heal but it doesn't seem to do anything. And gaining experience depends on using the skills that you attribute in the beginning of the game, not fighting enemies like traditional RPG's. Yes you can steal and virtual do anything you want, but that gets old after a while. The fact that you can travel from virtually any point in the map automatically, takes away from the game big time, traveling is a huge part of RPG's for me. Also, If the action gets too tough for you just go into the menu and slide the difficulty meter to easy, WTF is that?!?
Having played about 20 hours, it just wasn't fun for me (needless to say). I am not a deviant, usually when games have such ridiculously positive ratings like this one, I end up loving them like everyone else, which is why I'm so vexed!
The graphics are indeed very good with a real-time environment, the sun sets and the moon comes out etc, and all the NPC's do their own thing. This game does not play out like a typical RPG for me, it seemed more like a virtual reality game, a Sims game.
I love the FF series, exploring caves, fighting monsters, buying and selling weapons and armor, which is all in this game, although a huge problem for me is that it lacks incentive.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - If you have a family, stay away from this game

I have put over 250 hours in to this game.
I can't stop. Damn family commitments keep cutting into my Oblivion time, haha.

If you like to explore, you will love this game.

If you are a spaz and want to smash buttons, you might want to try something else.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good but Flawed
I am writing this review in hopes that the makers of Oblivion will see it. I am leaving out the pros of the game (of which there are many), and will focus specifically on a few main flaws that, if corrected, would make this the best game of all time. Here they are:

1. Creature/item leveling system- having your opponents and items you find level up with you has to be the worst idea ever in an RPG. It makes all the monsters and treasure totally generic and makes you feel like your character never gets any better, not to mention taking away the fun of trying to fight creatures that are far beyond your level.

2. Where's the dragons?- there are basically no large monsters in this game, including dragons (what a travesty!) and most of what you fight are humanoid or the occasional evil bear. I explored the land looking for wyverns or other such magical creatures to no avail. This seriously detracts from the fantasy element of the game.

3. Landscape and dungeons way too generic- what's the point of having a huge map (which actually isn't that big) when all the dungeons and ruins look essentially the same? I quickly lost interest in searching the land for these sights, especially when all the treasure and enemies you find are all relative to your level and not set.

4. No realistic Body Damage- I understand that this is an RPG, but it would be nice to have a head shot with my bow do more damage than normal. I'll never forget the look of an orc I was fighting with at least 10 arrows sticking out of his head and most of his HP still intact. If they are going to make an action based first person RPG, they should include differential body damage.

5. Where are the children?- There is not one child in this whole game. I've looked. This makes all the towns and cities you visit seem that much more lifeless and dull. Not to mention that the NPC's in town and cities are not very interesting and the dialogue system you use to gain information is really lame. I would rather it was like Morrowind where you have to read alot.

Overall, this is a great game, but with these flaws and others it is not 5 star. Once you realize how generic everything is in this game, it doesn't seem as big or exciting as it does at first, and for me there is basically no replay value. Can't wait for Elder Scrolls 5.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Game that keeps on giving--OBLIVION
This is the best game I have played to date. It is a game that has a great story, rich character, a huge world, and almost an endless amount of things you can do. Above all it is as involving as the player wants to be. You can rush through the quests and not be thorough or simply take your time reading all of the books you find, collecting various plants to make potions out of, or completing a set of armor to store in one of the various houses you can own in the game. The graphics are great, the sounds and voice-work is impressive, the orchestral music is grand and soft at the right moments. There are just so many ways to approach the game the replay ability is huge in that you can create a lot of different classes with various mixes of traits to play the game over again under a different light. If you want to feel like playing a game where you get your moneys worth and then some --do not hesitate to pick this up.
As far as the downloadable content to Oblivion is concerned: I have downloaded all of the add-on content that is offered on xboxlive for this game. The Shivering Isles content pack is THE BEST add on content--it is in fact more interesting and fun and engrossing than what I have played in the game with a few exceptions before they made it available to download. If you buy this game be sure to download The Shivering Isles--you will not regret it. If you get stuck or don't understand the menu system there are plenty of websites available for assistance, walkthroughs, ect... This is the best game I have bought so far- well worth every penny.
