Personal-finance software these days is a good example of a modern near-monopoly. There are only two players, at least for the pc: Quicken and MS Money. MS Money's on-line service now expires after two years, so I am forced to upgrade whether I want to or not. I understand Quicken is the same. I thought about getting an Apple computer, but the on-line reviews seem to say that the personal-finance software for Apple is even worse.

I became dependent on such software over the years having started with a DOS program touted by Andrew Tobias called Managing Your Money (MYM). That company was bought-out by, I believe, H & R Block, but the software disappeared. MYM was in my opinion the best product ever for personal use, even taxes. It was common-sense stuff and understandable, and it came with a good newsletter. When you made a change, you could follow its effects and fix conflicts.

I tried Quicken after that and didn't like it. Then I went to MS Money which seemed a little better, but not much. I just upgraded from MS Money 2004 Deluxe to MS Money 2007 Deluxe. The program is now so complex I sometimes loose confidence in the numbers, but not so much that I would abandon it.

The installation of the 2007 version went OK except that I have two separate MS Money files (one is a trust for which I am trustee) and the program confused the two in setting up the on-line links. In other words, it down-loaded information for both files in one program, a problem I never had with the 2004 version. It took me over an hour to sort it out because I finally figured out I had a preferred stock classified as a bond in one file and as a stock in another. When I tried to reconcile the double entry the program said "I can't", but didn't tell me why.

The new program pretty much does just what my old one does, but in a different format that I now have to learn. I think these are changes made only to justify new versions. There is a lot more advertising in the new version, usually in the guise of "advice" and the program is a little more sluggish than the old one. Some features are worse and many old habits are toast. For example, in the 2004 version one had the ability to switch between investment accounts in the Account Summary view by right-clicking the account name. In the 2007 version you have to switch into the Investment Transaction view to do this. Bottom line, I am paying in both money and frustration for an extension of the on-line down-loading service.

Andrew Tobias, why have you abandoned us?

Microsoft missed on this one. I had been using MS Money for the last 10 years or so and have purchased upgrades as they came out. This one may be the last. I do not like having to set up with MSN live simply to install the program. I just wanted to balance my check book and track budget items. MS needs to go back to the drawing board on this one.

- Excellent Accounting/Banking Software
It would be difficult to beat this standard for software to manage personal and/or business finances and bank accounts.

Ugly, plain not working, cannot believe MS would release something with this level of quality. So totally not working. Lots of MS ad here and there, cannot even do a balance sheet right. This thing is so fragmented it cannot do one thing right. Avoid.

- Poor Quality - Buggy and Slow
As a longtime user of Microsoft Money 2001 I will now be switching reluctantly to Quicken. Why? Because MS Money failed to download all my transactions from the bank, leading to a completely false balance, and its reports are slow and sometimes do not want to appear at all.

I am amazed that Microsoft should fall short over such a relatively simple product, and one that has been around for so long.

I can only hope that Quicken is better!
