Electronics Logitech Harmony 720 Universal Remote

Domain Name Com's - Electronics : Logitech Harmony 720 Universal Remote

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Design: Inspired Quality: Atrocious
The poor review score because of software it died in less than a year.

The remote control unit is the perfect design. Good placement of buttons, nice touch, intuitive design. Sturdy unit for 10 months of mid-moderate use. Then the screen went haywire. The screen is unreadable. None of the buttons work either. I didn't sit on it or anything; one day it was just fried.

Until yesterday when the screen died my biggest beef had been with the software. Indeed, it controls everything in the Living Room AND Bedroom. But not without much irritation during the programming stage. Navigation within the remote control unit does not suit navigation within the online programming software. Remote commands learned in one Device may not be accessible in another Device, which isn't a big deal when you actually have the manufacturer's remote, but if you've lost your original remote, it's needlessly complicated, and maybe impossible.

I didn't use to be fond of the online aspect... you have to be online to update your Remote. But Logitech upgrades its software all the time, so having it online like that is actually good. The software HAS IMPROVED over the past 10 months. The unit, however, is done for. I'll try again with a newer model.

Buy the unit, but get the EXTENDED WARRANTY when possible.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This Added Harmony To My Marriage
To quote a reviewer on another website, "Next, I'm gonna teach this thing to tie my shoes!"

My wife used to be totally intimidated by our home theater system and the 4 remotes to run it all. She'd call me at work to walk her through the process of changing from watching TV to watching a DVD.

I purchased this Logitech Harmony 720 remote as a Christmas present for her. I had already programmed it before wrapping it. After she opened it, I didn't explain how to work it, I just asked her to figure out how to watch a DVD. She looked at it for a moment, pressed the button next to "Watch A DVD", then laughed with delight when all the right equipment automatically came on. Then she went directly from that to "Watch TV" with no help from me. She LOVES this remote!

Programming a Harmony remote is so simple (but an internet connection is required - preferably a fast one). The hardest part is obtaining the model numbers of all your hardware. After that, the Logitech Wizard walks you through programming with simple questions. In most cases, that's all you'll ever need to do. It even works my Lasko tower fan (amazingly, it was in the Logitech database).

I have since gone back into the software and tweaked most of the settings. That was easy to do and allows a lot of customization. I find that the longer you own and use this remote, the more things you think of to make it slightly better. I haven't found anything yet that I can't get it to do. I even programmed it with some advanced commands for my rather complex Yamaha A/V receiver.

My wife and I both love the automatic light on the remote. It's not overly sensitive, which is great. You have to pick it up and tilt it before the light will come on. That means you can set it in your lap and the light will stay off even if you wiggle a bit. The LCD display itself is very easy to read. It's much improved over the Harmony 550, which I also own and which already has a good display. Where the 550 has black text, the 720 has white text which seems brighter. I've discovered that if you make the text all capitals, it's especially easy to read.

One con I have is that the DVR/DVD/VCR transport buttons are rather small. But that's the case with most remotes, so it's not a huge con. In fact, since my wife doesn't see very well, I programmed the transport controls to show up on one page of the lighted screen. She uses that feature all the time.

Another possible con is that the documentation for programming and using the Harmony remote is not great - even through the HELP screens on the website. However, there are a lot of excellent forums online where people (such as me) who use this remote are willing to answer questions on advanced programming.

In summary, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Harmony 720 remote!

NOTE: If you can't justify the cost of the 720 and you don't have a really complex A/V system, consider the Harmony 550 (see separate review). I own one of those for my bedroom A/V system and it's perfect for that.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Warning
I bought this because of all the great reviews and I am very disappointed. This is only for gadget geeks as it takes at least two hours to program it and even then none of it worked properly. For example, my new Sony HDTV is listed on their list, but not an option for the HDMI input needed for a DVD. Therefore, when using the DVD I have to pull out my old TV remote and switch inputs. The software you use is archaic and confusing and the unit itself has a cheap feel, not what you'd expect for $200. Mine is on it's way back.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great Deal for the $
After doing a lot of research, I ordered this remote as a birthday gift for my husband. I read a number of reviews that said that some of the Harmony remotes were difficult to program, however, we did not find this to be the case with the 720. We got everything up and running within less than a hour. Also, the lithium battery makes a nice touch as there are no batteries to replace. The remote is also easy and sturdy enough for the kids to use. As a plus, the price is also the best that I found out there. The only reason I did not rate this item with 5 stars is that I have found that you have to get the remote angled just right in order to have it turn on the cable/tv/receiver. On the plus side, if one of the systems does not turn on, the remote has an onscreen help button that walks you through a series of fixes which resolve the problem. Overall, I would definitely recommend this remote.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great remote
After much research, I decided to buy the 720 instead of the 880. The 720 provides many functions and features that the 880 has. The remote was very easy to program. I was able to program the remote to control my xbox 360, HDDVD, tv, reciever, and satellite reciever. I got it to work the firt time I tried it. I read a couple of threads on AVS forum on how to properly program the remote, so I was pretty much prepared on what to expect.

The remote does a great job. I have customized it to my likes such as my favorite shows, slide show, and activities icons. This is a really good investment. The price might seem high at first, but the remote essentially pays for itself in the long run. Now my wife can do any activity with my system by the simple press of the button. This remote is better than any of the original remotes for my components. Overall I would highly recommend it to any in search of nice remote.
