- Would be nice if it wasn't another separate piece
I hate that this piece adds yet another cable/piece to my windshield. Who wants that? It works fine as a traffic receiver, but I don't like having all the extra stuff on the windshield.

Other GPS systems have the traffic receiver built in, or the traffice receiver serves as the power supply and the receiver so only one cable is hanging from the device/cradle.

Rating:

- A Ouija board would do better
I got this with the Garmin 340, and I agree with those other reviewers who've panned the traffic receiver. It's a great idea poorly executed.

As others have said, it's just not accurate. It tells me that traffic will be slow in areas where the traffic moves fine, it has misidentified the location of the only accident I've seen it display by a good mile, and I've been stuck in traffic worse than what it led me to believe. I'm not quite unhappy enough with it to rip it out and leave it by the side of the road, but unless the quality of the service improves dramatically, I'm another person who won't renew my "free" subscription next year.

I see no reason why they can't tap into the same set of traffic sensors that our local news station uses (in the SF Bay Area) to power their traffic Website, where I can see every single accident in the Bay Area, and the current speed in miles per hour on almost every mile of every freeway. If Garmin/Clear Channel would give me that level of information, I'd pay for it tomorrow.

My opinion more or less mirrors a lot of other people's it seems. I've had this for going on near a year now and while the device itself is ok (although a little bulky and awkward), the service is really hit or miss.

I drive around in the Boston area, and one of the first things I noticed was that it only reports major multi-lane interstate highways, basically.. and even at that, not all of them. Anything in the city proper or its suburbs is totally silent, even if it's a major thoroughfare. More often than not, my nuvi will try and direct me off the highway onto a road that's just as jammed if not more so. And this is when the data's accurate, which isn't terribly often. It seems to me that in my area what I get is around a half hour behind most of the time.

For me, it got to the point where I really didn't trust the directions my nuvi would give me when I had it plugged in. Even though I have a couple months left on it, it sits unused in my glove compartment.

If you're looking into getting one of these, I'd strongly suggest you find someone nearby who already has one and look at the sort of reports it gives on a regular basis, and decide if that quality of information is good enough for you.

Don't let this steer you away from buying the Nuvi itself though, I love mine and would recommend it to anyone.

- Functional but poor use of technology
Yes this unit works are advertised but the service needs work. The Traffic Network people them selves have several issues to resolve.
1) Construction zones listed are incomplete or not up to date.
2) Traffic backups are inconsistent in reporting some are missed while others are listed well after the backup has cleared.
3) Traffic accidents are not updated in a timely fashion this makes the service pretty much useless.
As stated before the unit itself is not the problem it is the service provider that bites.

Rating:

- good in the right area
The device works very well when you are in an area that supports traffic information. Like on major highways and interstates near major cities. If your not then it doesn't notify you. However, it may still get you around traffic if you see it ahead and can detour to an exit. This does not always work if your not somewhat familiar with the area. Other than that it's pretty cool. I think the yearly subscription fee is a little high.
