Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - If I could put negative 1 trillion stars I would
There is no question. This is probably the worst operating system to ever come out into the computer industry. Basically, its a piece... Well, you know what I mean. I promise you, there is a VERY GOOD REASON WHY WINDOWS IS THE MOST POPULAR OS IN THE WORLD. Most of what this OS has is stolen from other OS's, even things like widgets (on the dashboard), minimizing windows (from Microsoft Windows), the very NAME "Windows" (used to describe open applications on the desktop), maximizing windows, virtually everything on it is copied from other OS's, and there is a reason why Apple did this. Their OS is terrible, and they needed to steal from other companies in order to make theirs popular, which even now isn't as popular as Windows, which it stole primarily from. The reason I am writing this review isn't just to trash something on the net, its to help others not fall into the trap that Apple makes out of its OS. Sure, alot of proffesional people use it, but that's because they only need to do one thing, and Apple can do that, but nothing else. If you need to do anything other than browse the web (Apple can't even do that very well, with Safari), then get Windows.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Buying a Mac? Learn about OSx86 and VMware.
Apple announced that Intel core duo processors will be used in the new range of Macs. Hardware developers and programmers and just about everyone else ask what is stopping OSX from running on a non-apple computer with Intel processors... turns out that there was not much except for some code in the OSX software. Then somebody changes the code in the fall of 2005. Now everyone who wants to see and use OSX before they buy gets VMware, obtains a copy of OSx86 and boots the latest Mac OS on Windows or Linux. This is not dual booting. VMware is virtualization software. Modern hardware is fast enough to run other Operating Systems at 75% or above speed at the same time. Seeing OSX running on Windows or Linux will have eyes open wide in the room around you. For Mac users who have shelled out their hard earned cash on a Mac, seeing this reaches down into the very depth of the soul. Apple announces a new boot camp that allows Macs to dual boot Windows, but not virtualize it. Back in the 80s - 90s there was good reason to own Mac hardware. In the 21st century all hardware companies are mostly using third world sources to build their components. So in terms of Mac hardware versus clone PCs, there is not much difference anymore. OSx86 booting on a non-apple computer is the biggest event in the history of Apple Macintosh. It will make you think.

OSX is great. For anyone who has booted Linux or FreeBSD can see the advantages of having a desktop that is better than Gnome or KDE. That is OSX. Beneath OSX is a type of FreeBSD-like system. That is a UNIX-like system. Mac software does cost money though. There isn't much more to this topic other than the above. This is the current model of thought when it comes to OSX. There are many in denial that OSx86 exists. The development is that significant. Just learn about it. Then consider your next move.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mac does a great job again!
Mac's Tiger operating system is an improvement over an already excellent earlier version.

I also have have upgraded to iLife 6 which is a marvelous suite of products for photos, videos, music and production of DVDs.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mac OS X 10.4.3 Tiger DVD - good upgrade
OS X Tiger (10.4) is a sufficiently important upgrade from Panther (10.3) to consider it seriously. Increasingly more programs are written to run only on Tiger and not on previous versions. One example is the spectacular Google Earth which was one of the items that tipped me over in favor of going through the upgrade.
A major operating system upgrade should only be attempted after having created a full backup copy of your installation onto another disk (or even an iPod with sufficient available space in it). I use Carbon Copy Cloner for this and I had to go through the drill 3 times, each time testing pre-existing programs to see if they no longer worked as before. A small number had problems, but they had Tiger-specific upgrades that I could easily get.
New Tiger features like Spotlight and Dashboard are great. I use them frequently now. There is nothing like them on Windows XP (which I use at work every day).
I used an "Update" mode install (the default) although I have a somewhat large and complex setup on an older system, a dual 1.42ghx G4 PowerMac with 2GB of RAM and 9 hard disks with a combined capacity of 2.1 terabytes (i.e. 2,100+ GBs), several accounts and 3rd party software packages.
When I upgraded from Jaguar to Panther, the "Update" install did not work for me and I had to use the "Archive-Install" which is a bit more drastic about cleaning up your pre-existing settings.
This time, the more painless Update install worked fine.
Tiger is a worthwhile upgrade and the Amazon discount didn't hurt either.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Great for movies, music but that's all.
I got this os with my new iMac, it plays music from a CD, the software comes with none. It plays dvd's. No tutorials to help you get started, it does have some microsoft junk bundled with it. I paid more to get a mac so that I would not half to deal with microsoft. The printed documentation is of little help. My first iMac 9.1 came with a lot of extras, Appleworks, music, movies, and a good tutorial. Also none of my software that I am running on 9.1 will work on Tiger.
Not happy with my $2,000 + purchase .
