Domain Name Com's - Software : Apple iWork '08

- Not as compatible as I'd hoped
with Microsoft Office files :-(. Also not as intuitive as I'd hoped. No doubt I need to spend some time actually learning the software to get better results with it, but some things seem harder to do than they should be without extensive reference to the help system. Maybe it's just me, but the help information isn't always as clear as it could be either. I'm a longtime Windows user (which may play into the "not intuitive" problem), so I may have been better off buying Office for Mac, but I was just looking for "light duty" applications for occasional home use and I try to be open to learning new things.

- Vastly Improved From Last Version
iWork '08 is vastly improved from its last version. It now meets and in some ways exceeds Word. Lives up to Apple's high usability standards. Layout view in Pages is unmatched by other software in its class. Basic word processing is excellent and less clumsy than Word, but not as advanced as Word. Can't speak as much on Numbers and Keynote, but seem like very viable alternatives to the competition.

I have this package on my MacBook. I would say, if you are doing complex media work like brochures or stuff like that, it is superior to other stuff I have seen.

But I have to say, after buying this for about $ 80 at the Apple store, and then downloading NeoOffice (a free open source package), I have to say that for the things I do (basic word processing), that NeoOffice is far superior.

One example: format copying on NeoOffice is easily recognizable as a broom icon. I still can't find a similar function on Pages, even though I have used Pages for about 4 weeks. I also could not find out how to change the language of a document in Pages. Pages is just too complex, and I have to say the NeoOffice and OpenSource beats it.

Rating:

- iWork 08 Numbers is not an Excel Substitute
Apologies for those not using Numbers, but there is no method to review it separately.

iWork 08 numbers is missing a subtotal feature.

This makes it entirely impossible to use to examine budget data (e.g. how much I spent at the grocery store last month).

If you are looking to use iWork as a substitute for MS Word, you'll be doing okay, but Numbers is simply not a good Excel replacement.

Stunning software. Apple at its best. I work professionally with dozens of software, as a designer and photographer, and nothing matches the intelligence, simplicity, and sophistication of this software suite. And at this low price!
