Domain Name Com's - Electronics : Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator In-Ear Earphones (Black)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Believe the Hype!
There are almost as many complaints about these earphones as compliments. While no product is perfect, this comes close. The below might help those who are disappointed.

Sound - You get pure, accurate sounds - period.

Bass - With a flat equalization, the bass may not be adequate for some. If your iPod/device has a bass boost, you should use it for satisfying lower frequencies.

Fit - The earphones come with three tips. The two pairs of flanged tips are recommended for long term use (mine were both the same size, though they claim to have a standard and a small size), and are comfortable for extended listening, but need to placed properly in the ear for a good seal which provides deeper bass and better noise isolation. Gently move the earphones around until you get the best response. The foam tips are easier to put in place, but are considered disposable. Try these if you are not getting the bass you were hoping for.

Basically, the potential to get an outstanding sound is there. I cannot emphasize the fact enough that you must adjust the earphone in your ear to find it. Once you do, you'll know how to insert them in the future. I have to tilt mine up and inward. Sometimes opening your mouth helps. I don't wet mine, especially since it seals them too well and the suction makes it more difficult to get them out. If you don't get them in just right, you will be disappointed, so keep trying. You'll be glad you purchased these!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - worth buying, with a few caveats
i purchased these phones because they are supposed to have a fairly flat frequency response, they are designed for isolation, and can be worn over gun muffs (think firing range ear protectors). this is handy if you are trying to hear a signal from a mic as you are positioning it on a loud source like a guitar cab. i also used these to do ear training which requires the production of frequencies down to 30hz.

here is the breakdown.

isolation: i think they do isolate to their specs. good.

freq response: even though these are supposed to have pronounced bass i wasn't hearing it. perhaps the pronounced bass was at 100hz. for hearing much below 60hz i just couldn't hear it. and if you are wondering, yes i have heard down to 30hz on other systems. good news, most people would never miss this and it certainly isn't a place where most of the musical information is. the specs say flat to 50hz but i think this is a bit generous. overall not bad.

comfort: to get true isolation you need to kinda wet these things down and slide them into your ear. they also have to be in there just right or they won't sound balanced (no bass). and when removing them you have to take care to break the seal or the resultant suction will hurt. they tell you this in the manual. i'm sure this is typical of all these flanged style ear buds. just be aware.

overall, not bad for what i paid. i'd buy them again.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - better than expected
I use these as hearing protection as well as enjoying great stereo sound while ridding my motorcycle. Great value

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - No base output
I had to return these earphones because they lacked bass output. I am no audiophile but it was clear that these earphones lacked bass. The earphones that came with my old Sony Walkman were much better than these.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Nice audio but poor industrial design
I got these headphones as a backup to my Shure headphones that I (temporarily) misplaced.

My first experience with these headphones was to get them out of the blister pack they were stored in. Getting to these headphones was like trying to break into Fort Knox. Blister pack requiring scissors, then another layer to access the headphones, then removing tape, then wires, then wiring, and then pulling them out of their bed without breaking the wire... Etymotic - take a clue from Apple's out of the box experience, because your packaging is really, really irritating.

I've been listening to these phones for a few days now. Once screwed into your ears they are very comfortable. And the audio quality is really superb - it's the best I've heard for this class of headphones. But when you're listening to something quiet with one instrument they lose it. The thin wires to the earbuds rub against your shirt when you move your head. Because the wires are so thin?? they transmit the friction of their movement to your ears - amplified. What the ? It's very irritating, and the first time I've heard this. Why the thin wires? I'm constantly afraid that I will break the wires when I use these headphones...

So I'm putting these headphones back into their very nicely provided bag, and going back to my Shure headphones (now that I've found them).
