Electronics Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator In-Ear Earphones (Black)

Domain Name Com's - Electronics : Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator In-Ear Earphones (Black)

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Nice audio but poor industrial design
I got these headphones as a backup to my Shure headphones that I (temporarily) misplaced.

My first experience with these headphones was to get them out of the blister pack they were stored in. Getting to these headphones was like trying to break into Fort Knox. Blister pack requiring scissors, then another layer to access the headphones, then removing tape, then wires, then wiring, and then pulling them out of their bed without breaking the wire... Etymotic - take a clue from Apple's out of the box experience, because your packaging is really, really irritating.

I've been listening to these phones for a few days now. Once screwed into your ears they are very comfortable. And the audio quality is really superb - it's the best I've heard for this class of headphones. But when you're listening to something quiet with one instrument they lose it. The thin wires to the earbuds rub against your shirt when you move your head. Because the wires are so thin?? they transmit the friction of their movement to your ears - amplified. What the ? It's very irritating, and the first time I've heard this. Why the thin wires? I'm constantly afraid that I will break the wires when I use these headphones...

So I'm putting these headphones back into their very nicely provided bag, and going back to my Shure headphones (now that I've found them).

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Etymotastic
Love 'em. Lightweight, inexpensive (relatively) and not only can I hear Monk's mumblings even clearer, I can hear them without being distracted by the screaming baby next to me on the plane. Also, they sit in the ear in such a way that I can sleep flat on a pillow with them in without any discomfort when I'm on the road trying to sleep in a hotel next to the airport/late night construction crew. I've received other brands as gifts ( don't remember which) and gave them away simply that they weren't that much better than the standard Sony earbuds. But the Etys are brilliant.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - ER6i: don't belive the hype
I had reasonably high expectations for this product, based on a few online reviews. I will agree that there is a certain clarity and presence to the midrange, but stop there. I am totally disappointed at this product. These could be classified as "gutless". There is *nothing* resembling bass here. In fact, they sound disembodied and thin. These do not deliver bass as the recording intended, they deliver no bass. These sound like $9.00 ear buds with a rubber surround. It's as if they took the same cheap transducers and made them into an earplug. The claims of eliminating outside noise are greatly exaggerated as well. They do kill about 15db, but nothing like the claim. I returned these. I recommend Bose "over the ear" headphones (really!) or Sennheiser 280HD for far superior performance at a similar price. Again, the ER6i are a good set of $12.00 headphones for $74.00.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - People looking for any bass - move on. Otherwise keep reading.
I was super excited to give these earbuds a try per many stellar reviews from different websites. I tested these out on my iPod and my computer with many different EQ settings to try to find some happiness. --- this is what I found.
PROS:
-SUPERB Isolation
-EXCELLENT Clarity (you will hear things you never heard and sometimes do not want to hear!)
-The ear plug although looks like it will kill your ear, is actually fairly pleasant. It will take some practice to get the right fit and placement (deep) into the ear, but once there you're good.

CONS:
-Bass. Bass. Bass. These things offer almost 0 bass. If you push them to far they get extremely distorted on the low end.

And that is the reason they were returned. If you a fan of little bass these are definitely worth checking out. However for the majority of normal listeners the stock iPod headphones will offer more balanced sound than these...but NO WHERE NEAR the clarity of these.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Works as advertised
Very good design...the cord/earphone seems very durable and works as advertised when inserted correctly. I learned that If I can hear myself breathe and hear the cord when it rubs on the front of my shirt then they are inserted right. There will be zero bass if they are not inserted right.
