Software Norton Internet Security 2006 [OLD VERSION]

Domain Name Com's - Software : Norton Internet Security 2006 [OLD VERSION]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Norton Internet Security (2006)
Very slow upon start-up! It takes a minute or so to load. I run another program to clean up ads. I still run my old utilities program from a CD because the microsoft repair program did not come with this application. My only other experience is with an old McAfee program (2002) that allowed a virus to pass that Norton found upon installation. I want a feature to better block the info that is collected by my ISP (Yahoo).

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Very poor customer service
This product causes the blue screen of death whenever I used my CD drives or my camera usb connection. After many sessions with Symantec tech suppport trying different solutions I had to pay Microsoft $35 to tell me that Norton Internet Security was the culprit. As soon as I uninstalled the product everything worked like it should. Symantec finally acknowledged it was their problem and gave me an idea how to fix by fooling with the registry but this I determined was too dangerous. They said they had corrected the problem in a later version but they refused to offer it free. I have 3 computers running this software but will never renew.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - has finally become too annoying
I have used Norton products for years, even though my IT support friends suggest not. Years ago I stopped using System Doctor after it wrecked my registry. However, I've used Internet Security carefully and in a household with three computers it has kept us safe. For that I give them credit (we are also prudent generally and have a router/firewall which we barely understand).

However, with the 2006 edition of Internet Security, I am done. Next year I will go through the pain of changing products. Here are my reasons:
* Live Update is set to automatic but frequently asks if you want to get new updates and when you say yes it checks and says there aren't any (not very automatic, this process involves about 3 or 4 clicks and dialogue boxes).
* Periodically it screams that there's a rapidly spreading threat and do you want the update (it's turned to automatic).
* It won't stop scanning outgoing email even when you tell it not to. This causes the server to timeout on a large email, say over 2 MB, so as a practical matter, my ISP's allowance of 10MB is cut back to 2MB. Only workaround I've found is to set some odd numbered port, but I don't understand that well enough to feel safe.
* Today I responded to a friend's invitation by hitting "reply all" in Outlook (about 10 cc's) and so it included me on the list and Norton stuck me in the spambox - my own email as sender. This has happened a half-dozen times and I've patiently clicked "not spam" each time; it doesn't retain the lesson.
* It insists on sitting in my systray with an alert because it says I have two mis-configurations putting me at risk: 1) I won't turn OFF Windows upate (!) and 2) I have outgoing email scanning set to OFF (though it doesn't work).
* When it is doing its weekly full system scan, it takes over the memory (I have 768MB of RAM) somehow in a way that earlier versions did not, and essentially slows the rest of the system to a crawl, so I now have to pause the scan while I do anything else; earlier versions ran OK in the background.
* There are two or three other similar annoyances I forget, but I've had it. I'm so aggravated that this is the first online review I've written, just to warn fellow users, although I see now that 2007 is out. I'm not going to risk it.

So to summarize, I have no complaints about my actual protection, but I find the current engineering too driven by marketing (having to respond to alerts) and generally noisy and annoying. I am done with Norton and Symantec and will try a product recommended by my IT support friends.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Insecurity Issues
After using Norton products for the past five years I found myself thoroughly displeased with this one. To me, Norton's best features are its adblocking component, its antivirus protection and its firewall. Unfortunately, immediately after the install my Windows XP control panel froze and I could no longer uninstall any other software. It simply would not work and since I have a lot of software on my PC, it was at the very least, a most irritating feature.

Uninstalling the program was a nightmare and I finally resorted to System Restore and reinstalled, thinking that perhaps it was a one-time glitch. Not so. After three attempts and having my computer freeze up on me each time, I began looking for a replacement product. I wish Norton had some way to easily resolve this issue but since the buyer expects that to have happened before the purchase, I would NOT recommend buying this product. It has some great features but if you can't use them, what's the point? It's kind of like buying a car with a new engine and no brakes! Would YOU want to drive it?

Trend Micro PC-Illin is a better product and a whole lot easier to use.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Nortons internet security 2006/bad buy
purchased a new computer. installed nortons internet security 2006 on it and my beautiful, fast, accurate system is now as bad as an early 386!! i can't even uninstall it (Is there a way?) tech support sent me to a website that offered to sell me additional norton's products and no help. i can't even uninstall w/ add remove/ or wipe programs. it hangs up my system whenever i try to access it or other programs as well, forget about being able to see my email! right click on the systems tray icon and the computer freezes. my new system is a mess!!!!! i do not trust norton's any more. i gave it a 1 star because there was no zero choice.
