You either use Quicken or MS Money (or some 3rd party variety) personal finance software. If you're happy with what you're using, why change?

The reason I changed is that I had been using Quicken for a number of years, then migrated to a different hard drive. Oooops! I misplaced my Quicken 2003 CD-ROM! Well, time to upgrade, anyway. Let's take a look at what's available on Amazon...Hmmmm...let's read the reviews...hmmm...HMMMMM! It seems as if Quicken has gone the way of so many successful high tech trail blazers: greedy corporate moguls. Before they were the Davids, now they are the Goliaths (Names like Apple, Compuserve, and even Microsoft come to mind).

Well, heck, why stay with a vendor who is phasing out backward compatibility and going greedy corporate on me, when I can switch to a backward compatible (and certainly always MS operating system compatible) long term greedy corporate icon? MS Money 2006 is the ticket. Yeah, gee, I was so getting used to Quicken making me add all these balance adjustments every time I downloaded financial data from my bank or credit cards. Oh, well, time to learn something new. I've learned not to get too attached to any single vendor. Free market competition, and let the vendor who screws me the least get my business.

There is a learning curve to MS Money, like any new software. It imported all my Quicken data without any major hiccups. Yeah, it does things a little differently in some areas, but it works basically the same. I haven't used it long enough to complain too much. And, why are we using this kind of software, anyway? To consolidate and keep accurate locatable records, pay bills, know how much money I have to spend, and make tax time easier, right? OK, it does all that. It is also compatible with most financial institution data download formats. The rest is just personal preference and value.

Pretty, but no additional useful functionality. I hate the automating portfolio updating of stock prices everytime you start the program. Stock prices don't change between Friday and Monday, yet the program insists on downloading unchanged prices. The effect is unnecessary pause, after unnecessary pause, after unnecessary pause. There is a setting that is supposed to turn this off, but it doesn't! Calls and e-mails to technical support will get you anything except an answer. So, if you have a large financial database that has grown for several years, stick with Money 2004. Microsoft is only interested in new customers, loyal customers get stuck with a slow albatross. The Macintosh people have taken over!

I've been using Money 2004 Deluxe and I read an article that recommended that unless there are some obviously good features in a new version of Money - you only need to buy the new version every two or three years. The reason being is that after a while Microsoft does not make the patches and fixes available for download and over the last two years I've had to re-install Money 2004 that I know I don't get the updates anymore.

Since Money 2005 didn't provide any significant features (of interest to me) I've decided to try Money 2006 Premium this year. I've been using it for the last three weeks and it has been a nice surprise. Are there any (great) new features that compells an existing user of Money to upgrade - nope. But the biggest feature that I like is the online integration - something that Microsoft started doing with the 2005 product.

It's so cool to have Money 2006 automatically go out to all my bank accounts and get the latest information and all I have to do is review and accept. Much less painful that my manual entries and then having to log into my bank accounts and verify that payments have been processed.

As to the other posts regarding having problems ... it's been an easy install for me and linking to my MSN account has also been a breeze. I've had no problems with it so far - and even syncing to my palm with Ultrasoft has been just as stable.

- What's new?
I have been using Money for years and use most of the features. After installing Money 2006 I had a difficult time finding anything different from the 2005 version. I think it is a good product but certainly not worth upgrading from the 2005 version. If you have 2005 version you might as well stick with it. I can't tell the difference between the two.
