Software Suse Linux Professional 9.2

Domain Name Com's - Software : Suse Linux Professional 9.2

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Crashed my PC and lost all my data
I am now typing at a friends computer thanks to Suse Linux 9.2....

If you think this is better than Windows, don't fall for it, they must be paid on here to write these bogus 5 star reviews. First off, I followed the instructions, then I proceeded to a machine that will not boot. When I try to reload windows it comes up to a blinking cursor on the screen. ARRGG!

In the end I purchased Windows XP Home SP2 and had it professionally installed and it works perfectly. No for the rest of my data is long gone. Very bitter story and waste of money on this Linux rip-off.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Better than 9.2, somewhat Here are the major changes.
SuSE 9.1 was nice and complete, but as usual it had its flaws, just check the SuSE online support portal to see the bugs that made it into release. While 9.2 fixed the stupid kpowersave dameon from being useless (I can now adjust my hdd to be quiet on the fly, with it also reporting the clock speed throttling properly, and now letting you easily select standby options), it broke others. Perhaps it is because along with SuSE 9.2, Novell is also at the same time releasing the Novell Linux desktop, spreading the resources thin. For example, normally by now the ftp would already have the ftp install files. They normally get it done 3 weeks after the release. Two, I WOULD NOT PAY $75 FOR 5 CDROMS, AND NOT GET THE DVD DUAL LAYER DISC FOR BOTH 32 BIT AND 64 BIT. It came with 9.1. And because of that, a lot of packages and software that came with 9.1 are simply missing. Sure they will be added later, but about 2-3 months later? Unacceptable.

Next though really is the kernel. Starting with kernel 2.6.8 (or was it .7?), burning cds became a big issue due to the change in permissions on commands for the cdr drive. It wasn't too dificult to get around, but nevertheless, is a big pain. Check out k3b.org and you will see what I mean at the workarounds for it. But in this case it wan't Novell's fault.

Then comes KDE. KDE 3.3 is nice, but again, it seems the screen saver is messed up again somewhat. It works, just not the way it is set. Otherwise it's really nice. Don't like KDE? Pick Gnome or even icewm.

For the person there below who gave it a star for deleting your partitions: The install software YaST probably RESIZED your partitions. You probably didn't read the manual where it states you must defragment before doing this because it can't move NTFS data around, and you thus lost your data. Or perhaps SuSE was doing you a favor in deleting an archaic piece of trash off your system with it's added bonus of adware/spyware. Heck, having the msg "operating system not found" happens to Windows XP all the time, and with no apparant cause either! In fact, it happened to me, and my hdd had no issues with it whatsoever.

But hey, it's your choice to buy a Dell supported by scripted talking heads in India, who will only tell to you reformat your hdd for any issue you have anyhow, with an operating system so spyware prone (EVEN WITH LOSER SP2), hacker and virus and worm prone, with a desktop 3 years old in technology. Yep, no multiple desktops, little choice with configuring the desktop and start menus, no choice as to what desktop you can run, no way to repair or do basic tasks in cmd.exe when the gui goes broke, with a registry that corrupts itself.

Oh yes, get the "Dell Recommends Windows XP Professional" version of XP, since it's obviously more stable than home. After all, every home user needs the pro version to run that extra physical processor you can't install on your lame dell computer.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Read this The ugly to the bad to the good on suse 9.2
Well i call myself buying a 9.2 copy from a good ole bootleg dealer here at amazon to end up with a rar file nightmare of files all misplaced and a dead autorun feature with a automatic flop of a boot up on this boot leg , A complete rip off big time i guess it pays to buy a lic product , lesson learned big time i even had a group of IT tech laugh at this ( beware beware ) thank god it was only 13 bucks what a rip , So beware folks i had to blast this ? Also ( Word to the wise } Make sure you read the install directions in the manaul , If you dont have a manaul there is pdf version at Novell , Also another tip -> The suse linux 9.2 comes with a bootloader so you can switch back and forth to windows from linux at the begining boot screen something i found out the hard way when partitioning my hard drive and set up , As for using this program , It kicks but ? So much software and the power
will blow you away , And remember back up your hard drive
before you install . ( Heres a good site for undestanding how to partitioning your hard drive http://partition.radified.com/
good luck !!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent Product
Those who complain, need to pay attention to what they are doing in YAST installer. It is NOT difficult, but, can be a bit confusing, expecially if you are used to a different distribution's installer, such as Mandrake Linux. For those with nVidia cards (including Quadros), you need to be online, as getting the drivers is part of the online update section of the installation. YAST won't delete partitions, unless you let it do so. I have 4 Operating Systems on my computer, and I installed it without deleting any partitions.

There is alot of software it does not install by default. Same with Mandrake Linux Powerpack. Simply select detailed selection and click to your heart's content.

The only negative I can find so far (I have to test k3b) is that SuSE still does not include Mozilla Messenger (I'm partial to Messenger).

SuSE 9.2 Professional is slick, fast, and very responsive. Better than Mandrake 10.0 Community Edition Powerpack. I bought a CD set of 9.2 Pro for evaluation, and I think it is worth buying the boxed set.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Super smooth Install. Easy to configure.
I installed SUSE 9.2 on my Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop. It is Super Easy to Install. YaST utility lets you easily configure devices and install/install software so easily. Very straight forward. I installed my Microsoft wireless card (MN-520) and set up a home network. My SUSE machine is my favourite among all the machinces I have now. Highly recomended.
