Software .Mac 2.5 Retail [OLDER VERSION]

Domain Name Com's - Software : .Mac 2.5 Retail [OLDER VERSION]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good backup and online access to information.
I bought this application with my mac about 9 months ago, at first it seemed like a backup application, then I realized it was much more than that, especially with the new changes with the recent tiger upgrade. The web site is much more fluid and user friendly and managing the backup data and contact list is very easy. I would recommend this software to anyone that needs to access their data from a browser and does not want to carry a laptop.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Join, and then really learn how to use it!
I have had .mac since it first came out with System 9 in a free version. Why I renew:
1. The online tutotials are EXCELLENT!
2. I have a constant email address, no matter who my provider is.
3. Using aliases allows me to color code my email in the Mail application according to persona. For instance I have one name which I use for places I think might send me junk. If I decide I don't want to see it, I can simply hit delete it without even reading it. I could set up a Rule to move it to the trash also if I wanted to.
4. I know Apple is not going to go out of business and cut off my email. I have a gmail account, but that could be c ut off at whim, since it is free.
5. I love the ability to set up slide shows so easily and have used it to display photos of an apartment I have for rent on an easily-accessible website, using iPhoto.
6. The online storage can be allocated as you wish between email and other. I use this for exchanging large files (that would be too large for email attachments) with others.I simply put them in my Public folder
7. Version Tracker Pro, Backup, and Virex are all available free to memebers.
8. Amazon's price is a real bargain, and it is available even if you are renewing. I have been paying full price before this, and felt it was worth the price. This is icing on the cake.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Great for beginners
The suite of software and capabilities that is .Mac is generally great in concept but fair in execution.

The idea of being able to backup data or make data available online via a personalized web site seems to be the main attraction, mainly because most of the remaining software is included in OS X.

The only problem I've had has been with iDisk. For your annual payment (Apple calls a subscription), you get 250MB of server space that you can use for data and emails, to the ratio of your liking.
The down side is that uploading data to your iDisk is much more time consuming than straight FTP or Windows WebDAV. I managed to expose a glitch in the system whereas I had no files uploaded, but was informed that 238 of 250MB was already in use. I used every program I could find and searched out various Apple forums for help... good recommendations, but no solutions.

Tech support for .Mac is strictly email-only. I found that very distressing. Several emails and several days without results prompted me to call Apple Customer Care for a refund.
The next day, the problem was resolved. A pretty big headache for the casual user. Once it was fixed, however, it worked. Slow, but it worked.

"Your .Mac membership is designed to grow with you" so I hope it will get better, have more features, and become more stable in time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - .Mac is good bargain
I've used .Mac since it's inception, and have received a lot for my money. Here's what I actually use it for:

1. I use Backup to back up my entire Documents folder daily, which includes my most important financial documents.
2. Homepage - I use iPhoto & .Mac to easily post my digital pictures to the web for friends & family to see. It's hard to exagerate how easy it is to post these photos - select them, click a button, write a little blurb if I feel like it, press the 'publish' button and whalla - they're on the web.
3. I use iDisk to share large files with friends & family so I don't bomb their mail boxes.
4. I've used .Mac email through 2 or 3 ISPs, keeping the exact same email address - this is almost a priceless feature. Let me expound - friends & family that forget to update their address book effectively 'lose' their contact with you. Their spam filters might block your email because your new email address isn't in their address book. Because I get to keep the same email address no matter what ISP I use, I'm not concerned with this problem so many others face.
5. Free software - I just download WingNuts (a cute side-scrolling game) for free beacuse I'm a .Mac member. Everyone else has to pay $19.95 for it. .Mac keeps offering software freebies & discounts every couple months or so.
6. Creating .Mac slidshows - other Mac useres (whether they use .Mac or not) can subscribe to my .Mac slideshow as his screensaver. My Dad gets to see new photos pop up in his screensaver whenever I get around to updating my slideshow (which I do too infrequently).

That is what I actually use it for. It's a useful tool. .Mac space has consistently grown (no extra charge) and now provides a shared email/backup space of 1 GB. You can choose the ratio and modify it whenever you want - my current allocation is 512 MB for email and 512 MB for iDisk/Backup. A good investment.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Far more useful than you'd think
I took advantage of Apple's .Mac promotion when I bought my new Mac recently and I've been very pleased with it so far. For starters, 2 of my most basic needs were taken care of right away: Virex antivirus is included as well as Backup which allows you to backup files to removable media or your iDisk. This software alone can easily run you $100 alone. Secondly, apps and utilities like iDisk, iCal, and Address Book are far more useful than many give them credit for. The iDisk in particular (even more so now since Apple just upped the standard allotment to 250MB) is a great idea and works well for quick and easy archival of photos or just to keep the projects that I work on at the office available to me when I get home without having to email the file or carry around a removable media option. Several times the Address and iCal apps have saved me time when I've forgotten my PDA and needed to access some data quickly.
With a Mac, the .Mac service works extremely well and keeping info synchronized is simple. At the office, I use a Win2k PC and can still access my iDisk via Apple's iDisk utility. My suggestion to those on the fence about subscribing is to try the 60 day trial and READ all you can about the service and its supported apps get an understanding as to exactly what you can and can't do. If you like it, subscribe for a year and put it to use!
