NIS is a package of several Norton products. Unfortunately, it does not give you the option of unstalling (or uninstalling) them individually. If you get NIS be sure you want ALL of them installed and running on your machine. You can "disable" some of the individual components, but don't be fooled--they're still there and running. Although I disabled Norton AntiSpam, it is still there. Every time I start Eudora, a message from AntiSpam pops up telling me that COM automation needs to be turned on for it to run properly. I guess the possibility that someone might not want it to run at all never occured to the designers. Just to try to shut it up, I told it to go ahead and turn on COM automation. This did manage to cut the number of popups during start-up from 4 down to 2. But those 2 come up every time. And this despite the fact that I'm not even using AntiSpam.
Next, the big reason not to buy ANY Norton product: If there's a problem with it, Norton charges $30 to even tell them about it. Sure they say if it's their fault you won't get charged, but THEY are the ones who get to decide whether it's their fault. And you have to put up the 30 bucks to get them to decide. Nice little racket they've got there.

- What's the gripe?
The product has worked perfectly for me on my XP. No more banner ads, pop-ups, and the reliable antivirus. I work on word, explorer, netscape, acrobat reader, photoshop at same time (meaning using a lot of memory), but still dont see a problem with computer (getting slow or crashing). I have XP with 256MB RAM, 40GB memory. This product is way cooler than anything Ive used before (PcCillins and McCafees and Norton Antivirus alone). 5 stars all the way!

- NIS 2004 works well on my Laptop running XP
I was looking for a new version of NIS for the new laptop that I have had for a few weeks. I have NIS 2003 on my desktop and it worked fine. So I felt that I wanted to stay with Norton.

After reading some reviews I was a bit skeptical to be sure. But I found a version of NIS 2004 for $50.00. So with the $20 mfr rebate and the $30 upgrade rebate I decided to try it.

I have the Toshiba S126 laptop with 512 ram a Celeron 2.8 Ghz processor and a 60 GB hard drive.

First I uninstalled any programs that referred to Norton or Symantec. I proceeded to install NIS 2004. The installation took about 1/2 hour with upgrades. I have a HS internet connection. Everything went well with the installation. I am not aware of any problems at this time. I am using Outlook Express with 2 identies and it seems to be working OK.

Expect that some people that have had a problem with this program were not able to remove all of the older programs or had some sort of Firewall installed that they forgot to remove. I also read an account where it may not work well with some AMD processors, But for me it is working well. Only had about 4-5 security screens to respond to for this installation.

(...)I used it for years with no problems whatsoever. Installation is always a breeze and it's stopped numerous virus and security threats over the years. If you time your purchase right (...).

The 2004 version received PC Magazine's Editor's Choice Award (again). Trust their opinion. (...)

- Slowed my machine way down
I have a PIII-850MHz machine running Win/ME. This program drastically slowed my machine down, to the point that I uninstalled it. If you need a firewall, use ZoneAlarm. It's free.
