- Great technically, but not durable enough for the "road warrior"
I travel back and forth between NY and Seattle every week, so I log a lot of hours using my Sennheiser's. In fact, I bought my PXC 250's when I started this job about 10 months ago. They are taken out when I get settled in -- either to watch a video on my iPod Touch or PC or so I can listen to music as I fall asleep. The noise cancellation works great, "numbing" out the background noise very effectively and improving fidelity for both music and video. However, the weak link is the durability of the plug -- specifically where the wire enters connects to the rubber insulation around the metal plug. My headphones are now useless as the wire was first exposed and is now severed. This is always a trouble spot for electronics but one would expect a "high end" manufacturer like Sennheiser to engineer a better solution for such an expensive set of PORTABLE headphones. I take very good care of my headphones, putting them back in teh hard case after every flight. It is not acceptable for a product that is so expensive to fail after less than a year of use as it was supposedly intended. Despite my belief in the technical superiority of the Sennheisers, as well as the excellent over the ear design and compact form factor, i will be looking for another manufacturer of a replacement set.

I bought these for frequent airline travel both domestic and foreign. They are excellent headphones, perhaps not quite as good as the original Bose noise-canceling headphones, but for the price they are very exceptional. I believe that it is good that not all background noise is completely eliminated since on a plane you need to always be aware of what is happening around you. The most amazing thing about this unit is how noisy it sounds around you when you purposely turn off the headphones. The noise averaging technique of effectively eliminating the background sound levels by producing a phase inverted signal gets progressively better as times goes on which is a really nice feature in my opinion. The batteries also last a long time (> 24 hours of continuous listening), the sound quality of the unit is just fine and the headphones still feel relatively comfortable even after listening for quite a long time. There is even a nice clip on the sturdily built, plastic battery container that allows you to securely attach the unit to a shirt pocket to avoid simply holding it for a lengthy period. Finally, these headphones can be used equally well as a noise-canceling environment at work or at home or wherever you go as long as you stay safe about noticing your local surroundings.

Bought this to use on plane trips, as the jet noise really gets to both me and my wife. I loved it so much that I bought a second pair for my wife.

It does have the batteries and electronics in a separate "wand" type thing that sits in the middle of the cord, but since we only use this on plane trips, it doesn't bother us, as it just sits in our laps.

The quality is pretty good, too. With these on and not connected to any other audio source, low tones (engine noise) were muffled (even at the rear of the plane - behind the wings and engines), but you can still hear high tone voices and conversations. They sound like someone talking down the hallway from where you are. With music playing, I can't hear anything else.

I don't have experience with other units to compare, but hopefully this helps you. For what I need it for, it works really well.

Really like this and find it does well cancelling office background noise. The only feature I miss is having a volume control on the headset itself - preferably on the wire. When listening from a computer, changing volume can be awkward.

Great set of headphones. Only problem is that some airlines (United) has a 2-pin headphone plug is a combination of small & large and the adapter does not fit. To be honest, I've seen this only on United, no other airlines, so I can't really fault Sennheiser. The other thing I've discovered is that I can't use these with my iPhone -- again, not Sennheiser but Apple's design. Headphones really work nice with the noise cancelling feature. and much cheaper here at Amazon as compared to the in-flight shopping catalog!

The high quality of these headphones means you need to be careful that you don't hurt your ears on the plane. You can set the volume much lower and hear loud and clear as compared to the standard headphones that come on the plane!
