Domain Name Com's - : Freelancer

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Game
I have been playing this game for about 4 years, now, and I still love it. The online games offer an incredible ammount of new experiences with the Player Modifiable system.
There are many mods on different servers available and easily installable.
Provides endless hours of entertainment!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fast, Fun, and Full of Charm
If I have any complaint for this title, I would have liked to generate my own character.... (grumble, grumble)

That being said, Freelancer is just good ol' shoot-em-up/RPG/trade simulation gaming. Visually, I'm reminded of the displays from Bang! Gunship Elite and/or Colony Wars, and the gameplay is reminiscent of Syd Meier's Pirates. It's meat & potatoes gaming... but the whole is definitely more than the sum of it's parts. Nothing here stands out more than any other space sim, but the depth and size of the game universe will humble you. That's the way it's supposed to be.

AND... you can play darn near the whole game using just the mouse. Lazy armchair captains (that's me!) Rejoice!!

If you're looking for that old-school Traveller RPG adventure sim, give this a shot. It's easy to get into. And it's very large.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Space Game Ever
45 systems to explore
160+ bases and planets to land on
30+ ships to fly and upgrade
37+ commodities to trade
Hundreds of different weapons to use

Gameplay:
The game handles very well; you do not often see a space sim that is mouse controlled which equals great fun. You learn how to fly and to use docking rings, trade lanes, jump gates and other things during your Single player career. Very cool way to implement a tutorial.

Factions:
There are many different factions in Freelancer, from the beginning, some will love you and others will hate you. You can divide all the factions into 3 major groups:

Law Enforcement (House police, Military, Bounty Hunters etc.)
Corporations (Gas Miners Guild, Spa & Cruise, etc.)
Criminals (Liberty Rogues, Outcasts, Corsairs, etc.)

Trading:
Each ship has a different amount of cargo space, fighters have low amounts of cargo space, while freighters can fit much more cargo, a freighter is essential to make a good profit while you are trading. Trading is quite simple, you buy goods on a planet or base for a low price, then travel to another planet or base in another system and sell them with profit.

Mining:
Mining is quite simple; you just fly towards a mineable area on your map, hang dead in space and shoot little asteroids that come floating by.

Scavenging:
You can also go around and search for old derelict ships, which contain special guns, missiles, mines etc. and cargo. They are scattered throughout the systems in nebulas, asteroid fields and other hard to find places.

NPC's:
FL also features a large amount of interface with NPCs (Non Player Characters). You meet them everywhere, in bars, equipment dealers, ship dealers and commodity traders. You can engage in a conversation with people in bars, they can tell you rumors, give you missions, bribe factions for you or you can even buy information on planets and shipwreck locations. When you go to an equipment dealer, ship dealer or commodity trader there will be a person there you simply click on them to buy stuff etc.

Graphics:
The graphics in this game are absolutely stunning even when played on the lowest resolution (800 x 600 pixels). The game utilizes DirectX 9, and does so very nicely. There is a lot of detail in this game; you can shoot off other ship's guns, shields, wings, and various other parts of the ship. There is smoke coming out of badly damaged ships and they often try to run away from you as well. It is amazing to watch a battle between two or sometimes more factions going on from a distance, you will see missiles flying around in all directions, ships shooting everything that moves you will even hear communications from the battling ships.

Using trade lanes and jump gates is also an amazing experience, the animations that you experience are just amazing, traveling though tunnels of light really adds to the game.

Mod's:
Freelancer has a ton of mod's for it just search for Swat-Portal or The Lancers Reactor both sites are fan sites and both have a lot of information on the game including hundreds of modifications.

In all Freelancer is the best Space Game Ever.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Smashing
Great game to play takes a little getting used to.The higher you get the harder the game is to play

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Well done space adventure.
Not to say Freelance doesn't have its' drawbacks--it does--but they are easy to overcome. Simply, you go the LancerReactor web site and download your choice of modifications. One of mine is Discovery 4.82. This modification adds more equipment, money, weapons, ships to the game during the story and after.

The story, I seem to remember, ends at about level 27 with over thirty levels possible. Futhermore there are, I guess, about 25 or 27 solar systems involved with the storyline game...I count a total of 57 or 58 solar systems on the game board. Lots of places to go and explore after the game has ended. (Off the record, I wish Bungie had placed one or two 'wandering variables' in the game after the story had ended. This would have given you something to equip your ship for and to make more money for...afterall, you can't whip a level 50 ship with a level 7 ship, and if you don't get the best ship possible--fully dressed out--soon enough, THEY MIGHT WIN!

What do I mean by a wandering variable? In this case it would have been nice if another invader had entered that part of the galaxy...they send out super fighter craft that are level 50 with four fighters inside them at level 20. There mission would be to gather up mineral resources and fight anybody who interfers with them...sooner or later the mother ship would appear for the 'big fight'. This type of X factor can wander all over the starsystems and be unpredictable where and when. It would have given you something else to prepare for than just fight single and groups of fighters of they same type you've fought a dozen times before.

Nevertheless, I like Freelancer. I've had it for acouple of years and played it many times. You'll get tired of it after you've played it through the storyline 2 or three times...you put it away and play your other games, and then sooner or later you want to go back. Play the story line again, go to that one solar system you haven't searched yet...why not be trader this time, or a pirate.

So finally, dispite any complaint from the other reviews, if you like the idea of this type of game you should get it--there are a lot of Mods for it out there. If you do buy it, my advise is download the free Discovery 4.82 from Lancer Reactor and add it to the game the first time.
Bye!
