Domain Name Com's - : Freelancer

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Open-ended engine that allows for amazing replay value
Freelancer lives up to its name. Where others have failed, some miserably, Freelancer has not only succeeded, but raised the bar much higher for those to follow in its footsteps.
Even though this game has been ranked amongst the top pioneers, it does lack in some places, namely voice-acting, and planet environments.
The voice-acting is cheezy at best: characters in Britonia space will either speak in a fluent American accent, or an extreme stereotypical Enlgish accent. The action sequences contain dialogues that belong in the B-Movies.
The environments on the planets and other platforms (cruisers, trade platforms) are robust at first, as panels slide forth to help you repair and equip your ship, dealerships thrive with salespeople to help you buy a new spacecraft, and the ever present Bar presents the many possiblities of rumors, news, stock prices, and of course job listings. However, if you take into account the massive universe that this game puts together, the same formula applied to EVERY SINGLE planet begins to get a bit monotonous.
At the risk of seeming a bit too thankless for such a good game, I would suggest a bit more dynamic planet environment. Allow for some vehicles on the planet surface where the character is free to roam, just like in the space. This of course would add an extra dimension to the game (which is already immense), hence it would probably be easier to manage this by cutting down on the already present systems.
In conclusion, this game is awesome, a must-buy for ANY pc gamer, specially those who like Space Sims...All I have to say is, this is the first space sim I TRUELY enjoyed since Decent: Freespace...its positive aspects FAR OUTWEIGH any faults it may contain, including the ones I have mentioned.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Nothing 'Free' about Freelancer
The game makers declare the game to be open-ended and you are free to go and do as you choose. Nothing could be further from the truth. You MUST do EXACTLY as you are told or you are not allowed to buy better weapons or ships. ( YOU MUST BE LEVEL 16 TO PURCHASE THIS WEAPON. .. YOU MUST BE LEVEL 26 TO PURCHASE THIS SHIP.) And how do you achieve these levels? Well, in the minds of the corporate clones who designed this game, by being funneled into desperate and ridiculous scenarios with inadequate weapons, shields or resources. You are not allowed to break from the 'missions' and go make money or improve you gear as you were allowed in Privateer ( a FAR superior game) and you are FORCED to sit and watch embarrassingly lame little movies with laughable dialogue, none of which has the tiniest significance to the game, because after all, you will be TOLD what to do and when to do it, and you must repeat the sorry little chore until you are successful. It is impossible to divert for better weapons or resources, such as sheild batteries. (Absurd .. a spaceship that runs out of sheild batteries like a weak flashlight) The difficulty factors of the game are as simple minded and cliche as are the huge asteriod feilds and drifting junkyards. This is what happens when game makers should have been accountants. This game should be scrapped. It's junk.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - So much potential...
This game had so much potential, but only lives up to a fraction of it. I was really impressed by the graphics...although I haven't played many games of this type recently. I also greatly enjoyed the storyline, despite its linearearity. It is possible to go off the story line at most points, although there are exceptions. Contrary to what some have said, the galaxy is really a very big place and exploring can be fun.

Outside the story line, there are a number of ways to make money. Unfortunately, several of them are almost pointless -- mining is slow to the point of tedium and you're better off killing pirates for their weapons to sell than pirating tradeships for their cargo (due to the unlimited ability to carry extra weapons but the rather limited ability for a fighter to carry cargo).

That leaves basically trading and finding missions. Trading can be the fastest way to make money and figuring out the best trade routes can involve diplomacy with factions along the way and exploring to find short cuts. Once things are in place though, it can get boring. Missions are fun at first, but quickly get repetitive.

On the downside, the artificial level limitations some have mentioned can be annoying. My biggest complaints though are with the performance characteristics of ships and the non-storyline missions. Although a light fighter handles much better than a freighter, all light fighters handle the same and all ships are the same speeds. Further, although the storyline involves attacks on bases and battles with gunboats and battleships, the regular scenarios never involve anything besides freighters and fighters.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Game!
Yay,yet another space sim. One thing:Freelancer is the best space sim I've seen on the PC.
Freelancer,as the name suggests, let's you have a tremendous amount of freedom. You can just flay around in hundreds of miles of space. It's addictive. This game also has great graphics and animation, voice acting, and controls (except for the stupid mouse control).

However, you you are going to play this game on a laptop, you'll have some problems. Not technical problems, but control problems. In this game, you have to steer your ship using the mouse. This is extremely hard when you use a laptop track pad.If you really want to play this on a laptop, then buy a real mouse (for your laptop).

One good thing about this game,is that you don't need a powerful supercomputer to play it.I ran this game on a old Celeron 767 Mhz Emachines, and it ran really well. The only thing that you might have a problem with is having a good video card.If you have a old video card, then the text in the game (of which there is a lot of) will be unreadable.

PROS:
Great graphics
Great sound
A massive world to explore
Totally addictive
Don't need a powerful computer to run on

CONS:
Totally addictive
Need a good video card

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - What a great game!
One of the most realistic games in the history of space games. Unlike many other space sims, Freelancer is an easy game to learn but hard to master. Freelancer is one of the few games that can totally immerse the player in the game, unlike many other space sims the game doesn't revolve around the player. Police check other ships for illegal goods, and as you travel through sapce you can hear CPUs talking to each other. One thing Freelancer could have improved on was the graphics. Planetary graphics are breathtaking, stars REALLY look like stars. In dog fights, however, ships are pretty much reduced to a targeting circle. All in all though the graphics are absouloutely stunning. Multiplayer is also excellent with many servers to choose from.
If you like dogfights or if you like to trade or if you simply like to explore, Freelancer is the game for you.
