Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Teach Your Over Achieving Child Japanese--EASILY
After hearing inumerable Japanese phrases and other assorted Asian utterances--most likely from the hours my 9-year old niece spends watching Samurai Jack and Avatar--I bought her the first two books in the Jimi's Book of Japanese series in an attempt to at least encourage her to further her foreign language efforts in a meaningful way.

These books are great. After a brief period of time she's mastered both basic syllable sets of modern Japanese. I am happy to say I would recommend both books to anyone who is looking to motivate their kids/relatives to expand their intellectual horizons.

JIMI'S BOOK OF JAPANESE: A Motivating Method to Learn Japanese (Hiragana) by Peter X. Takahashi, illus. by Yumie Toka, (Takahashi & Black, ISBN 0972324704 16.95, 72pp.) is Terrific!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Learn kana with cool characters
This is the first book of the Jimi series, designed exactly like the Katakana edition, which I thought was fantastic. Both books together are a great introduction to Japanese kana (in fact, they compliment each other so well that I think having both is essential). Since this is the original book, it introduces the characters that appear throughout the book, namely Jimi, Robotto-san, and Akiko, which is a fun way to get things started. Each page contains a giant kana that you can trace with your finger while reading it (and watching Jimi's mouth to help with the sound), along with a few vocabulary words. Most of these include a culture note by Robotto-san, and these really make the book interesting (there are many more culture notes in the Hiragana book than the Katakana book, which is wonderful!). There's a cool bonus section that labels the parts of the body, but unfortunately these pages are only in Romaji with no Hiragana! All of the illustrations are cute and have such an adorable Japanese style, which gives the book a cool flair. I'm hoping there will be more Jimi books, because I'm wondering how they will present compound kana, or maybe even beginning Kanji! Even if you already know your kana, these books are a fun addition to your Nihongo study library.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fun!
This book is a really fun way to get started with Japanese. Hiragana is the first 'alphabet' that Japanese children learn. As well as showing you how to write the kana the book also provides you with a vocabulary to learn, these Japanese words are a great way to test what you have learnt providing you write them out on another piece of paper, so you can't see the 'romaji'. I am tempted to go through the book and cover up the 'romaji' so I don't become dependant on it, but I won't be able to do that until I know the sounds.

I think the best bit is the monkey's face whose mouth shape changes for each kana, giving you a small hint at the pronounciation.

The illustration has a very Japanese style to it and I guess this makes you feel as though you are reading a Japanese book. When you read through some Manga or the instructions for your dvd player and you can spot letters that you know, instead of just staring at something that looks like just a load of random squiggles, it is very exciting. This is what motivates me to keep going, although I do aspire to read more than just instruction booklets and Manga! I think Japanese children's books are probably the next step for me, but this book is definetely one of the best ways to get started with hiragana. Lots of fun!

Conclusion:- Great way to get started! Five stars!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant!
This book is brilliant. I bought this book for my two nieces, and they can't put it down. It goes with us in the car, to school, you name it. This book is fun and educational and teaches basic japanese through colorful visuals, clear definitions, and plenty of instructional guidance.

I never thought my nieces would be this interested in a book of this type, but they are! This is a great gift for kids as well as adults. You need to have this book in your collection!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Jimi's Book of Japanese
I'm a sophomore in high school and I use this book to help me learn the language easily and quickly. I hope to go on the foreign exchange program--hopefully to Tokyo or Kyoto, or possibly Osaka. I'm writing people's Japanese names and my teacher's too for extra credit. I've been studying Katakana and Hiragana since grade seven and this book has been the biggest help to me yet. Thank you, Peter Takahashi!
