This portable, handheld scanner provides a wide range of time-saving conveniences. With up to 1,000 characters recognized per second, the IRIS Pen II Standard Scanner is well suited for rapid scanning of small samples of text, for note taking, and for scanning tables. It can also scan directly into any Windows or Mac application starting at the position of the cursor.

The IRIS Pen II recognizes data on many types of documents, reading 6 to 22 point size fonts with text, numbers, handwritten numbers, and bar codes, as well as reading dot-matrix letters. It supports foreign language uses (up to 56 languages) and is programmable, letting you define two functions that are triggered by single and double clicks (tab, enter, space).

The Pen II provides improved image stability at varying speeds and offers gray scale document recognition. Additional features include left-to-right and right-to-left scanning, central line tracking, multiline mode, recognition of wavy or distorted characters, a line skew tolerance of 10 percent with a word slope tolerance of 20 percent, clear scanning of inverse text (white letters on dark background), and automatic input of tables (like invoices and price lists) into your database or spreadsheet. The idle mode reduces power consumption.

When directly connected to the USB port of a PC or notebook, the scanner supports plug-and-play operation and is powered by the USB port, so there's no need for an external power supply. Support for serial/parallel port is also available.

- works great
For a 50+ person who reads a lot for my job, this tool is excellent for notetaking and creating presentations, such as Powerpoint. The translation is a bit less precise than I wish at times, but that may be due to not having as steady a hand as I once had. Regardless, the time saved using the pen over hand written or typed notes makes this one of the greatest professional aids I have purchased in recent years, second only to my trifocals.

First, a warning. As I type this, Amazon's description states that this "Recognizes text, numbers, handwritten numbers, bar codes, and dot matrix documents." That description applies to the EXECUTIVE version of this product, NOT the Standard. Standard's software is NOT designed to output bar codes, handwritten numbers, and dot matrix documents. A test of handwritten numbers just now shows that it will read a few neat handwritten numbers, but only about 30% of them. As for dot matrix, the manual ... Read More

I purchased the IRISPen II with the intent to use it for my Master's thesis. So far I am very pleased with it.

It was very easy to install- I simply popped the CD in my Mac (running OS X), installed the software, and then plugged the pen into the USB port at the front of my monitor. Immediately, I scanned a line of text and automatically it was displayed on screen and imported into my clipboard. I could then copy that text into any application. I have been using the IRISpen for about a year and have been extremely satisfied. It is particularly useful for taking notes and reads standard text from books with few errors (and very quickly too). It can be set up for left or right-handed use and can be adjusted for text that is light or dark.
