A PC without virus-protection software is like a body without an immune system. Norton AntiVirus 2002 takes the place of T cells and antibodies as it monitors new and old files for viruses using its constantly updated definition list. Perfect for beginners and intermediate users, it offers simple installation and nearly transparent use, requiring only a few bits of information to start and occasional requests for user action when viral activity is suspected.

The interface is intuitive, appeals to common sense, and doesn't assume its users have a thorough background in computer security issues. Like all antiviral software, Norton has some quirky, unpredictable interactions with other programs and operating systems, especially newer versions like Windows XP. These are generally caught and patched quickly, but have caused some users grief; this can be compounded by Norton's inconsistent customer service.

Still, the horror stories pale in comparison to the real risk of damage caused by increasingly sophisticated viruses, worms, and Trojan horses roaming the Internet. Norton AntiVirus 2002 will give most users the security they need with almost no hassle. --Rob Lightner

The 2002 edition of Norton's AntiVirus retains the strengths that make it one of the best antivirus products on the market--low demands on system resources coupled with impressive strength against incoming and outgoing viruses, worms, and other malware.

The new version sports a revised and more simplified interface and it integrates into Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer as a small toolbar that can launch a virus scan on your system or connect to information on Symantec's Web site. With the rise of e-mail worms and Trojan horses, just scanning incoming mail is no longer enough, so Norton now scans outgoing mail to prevent your system from sending worms to everyone in your address book. Another new feature is script blocking, which promises to block script-based viruses, such as the I Love You virus.

The program largely runs itself. By default, infected files are repaired automatically without alerts to users. A pop-up box on the Windows taskbar tray informs you when an update has been completed. An optional plug-in scans Microsoft Office 2000 and XP files on opening. Virus definitions are updated automatically via the excellent LiveUpdate. LiveUpdate now uses "micro" definition files that supplement existing files and don't require huge downloads. Curiously, Norton AntiVirus still doesn't scan ZIP files, something that rival products have been able to do for some time now. - It is what it is. . .
2 years ago when I bought Norton Anti-virus, I thought it was great. Support was great, software was easy to use and did only what it needed, etc. Now I'm waiting for my license to run out on the 2007 verion. The software is still basically fine, but the support is now highly fee based. Also, their referance area of their website is plagued with errors which will send you to support. The antivirus is not the best. It keeps telling me to subscribe for it when i already did, even twice. It does not update its virus definations, and some viruses have turned off or destroyed the email scanning. Don't buy it. it was good until all that happened. ( no offfence to norton intivirus Inc.)

Zero stars! Updates are no longer available for this version of Norton Anti-Virus (2002). This includes virus definition updates. This software came preinstalled on the Dell pc I bought late in 2002. A month ago, I paid $20 to renew my subscription, and then found out that updates are no longer available for this version. - DONT BUY NORTON ANTI-VIRUS PRODUCTS UNTIL
they fix the numerous problems with their NAV suite; there are plenty of folks who have suffered after downloading unworkable virus definitions and you can not get in touch with Symantic to resolve problems. They take your subscription money ($29.00 US) and then leave their customers in the dust with non-working software. BOYCOTT SYMANTIC!!

Most viruses are loaded to your computer unwelcomed. I am ashamed to say that I paid for this one. Norton Anti-Virus seemed to work fine for my computer. It was scanning anything questionable and updated itself daily (although I haven't any real evidence of it having protected me from anything -it served as a safety blanket).
