EndNote 5.0 is the cure for all that bibliographically ails you: this package is assuredly a one-stop source for researchers, students, and anyone else wishing to catalog some sort of library. Whether you've used EndNote in the past or are starting on your first bibliographical foray, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the powerful features that EndNote 5.0 incorporates.

After a quick install, starting a new library is a snap. Creating each new entry, or reference, has a nice rhythm to it. You'll maneuver through any number of fields (EndNote provides several dozen, and you can also add customized fields) by tabbing or clicking, and auto completion will keep you moving along as the software recognizes past entries. And no need to manually save after each entry: every time you change data, EndNote saves.

The Cite While You Write technology in EndNote 5.0 allows for even greater integration with Microsoft Word 97 and 2000. This feature allows you to locate and insert citations without leaving your Word document. Because EndNote functions as a Word add-in, you'll find citation commands immediately off the Tools menu in Word. After pulling up a reference by any number of criteria, EndNote automatically inserts the citation and updates your bibliography. You can then format the citation with the Format Bibliography command. If you don't immediately see the style you're looking for, no need to fret: the Style Manager gives you access to the hundreds of styles available, letting you add to your favorite annotative styles.

EndNote is well suited to handling professional bibliography work: each reference in a library can hold a total of 64,000 characters, or about 16 pages of text. Additionally, each library can grow to about 32,000 records, or about 32 MB.

After entering your references, you've created a venerable library for yourself--searchable and concise. You may also import reference data, which allows you to avoid re-keying any other bibliographic work you've already done in Refer, BibIX, ProCite, or any tab-delimited data from spreadsheets, databases, and word processing applications. EndNote 5.0 has grown to include more than 700 styles, ranging from standards such as The Chicago Manual of Style and APA to lesser-known journal styles ranging from Advances in Agronomy to Yeast.

Another feature new to 5.0 is the traveling library. Each formatted citation in your document is saved with field codes that embed reference data in the document. When you share your paper, your citations go with it--even if you and your colleague are not using the same database.

- Be aware of price and lack of support
I bought Endnotes not realizing that as a student I could have gotten the product for 1/3 of what I paid for it. I had no way of knowing from the advertisement. It is a very expensive piece of software! It is also difficult to use without an inservice, so it has not been used much by me. I am waiting to meet with an instructor for instruction. This is disappointing. I can't give it a higher rating until I learn to use it.

Endnote is a fantastic program. The most impressive and useful feature not yet mentioned is the Z39.50 search feature. What this means is that you can click on "Connect" and go to the Library of Congress or other libraries or databases (OCLC FirstSearch, for example, although this one requires a password) and download the entries directly into Endnote. - Huge improvement from 2.3 (but still no geography journals!)
As someone who was using the 2.3 version of EndNotes (that came on floppy disks) and just updated, let me say the differences are polar. Controlling the format of your bibliography is infintely easier (numbering, spacing, fonts, etc); the number of reference types/templates has at least doubled (including "electonic sources"); the ability to unformat and reformat citations in Word is a major plus; the field completion in the database is a major time saver.

I've recently been exposed to this incredible tool for organizing bibliographical references, and most of my initial impressions are summarized in this thought: "I wish there had been something like this when I was writing my Thesis!" This is an extremely valuable software page if you work with lots of references. For individuals writing research papers, theses, dissertations, and grants, you will find this package saves you hours and greatly increases your organization and effectiveness in formatting and utilizing references. Endnote is extremely easy to use, and by all means take advantage of the online features immediately. Buy this software, you won't be sorry, I only wish I used Endnote during the years I was in graduate school.
