Whether you need to repartition your hard drive or prep a new drive, V Communications Partition Commander makes drive maintenance a point-and-click affair, offering automated drive partitioning and a host of functions not available through most operating systems. Partition Commander 6 adds a batch of new features, including impressive support for Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Linux.

Following the tradition of its predecessors, the newest Partition Commander is a robust application--a virtual Swiss Army knife of hard drive maintenance. Various features combine to form one of the most powerful hard drive tools available anywhere. Even the non-technical crowd will get almost as much out of Partition Commander as hard-core gurus, thanks to a platoon of nifty wizards that cover actions such as reclaiming wasted hard drive space and adding a second operating system to a PC.

Those are just a couple of Partition Commander's talents. Partition Commander allows users to go far beyond the simplistic drive prep procedures included with most operating systems, adeptly performing tasks that the others don't even acknowledge as possible. It can, for example, resize FAT16/32, NTFS, and Linux partitions without disrupting the data already stored on them, add or remove partitions on working hard drives, and convert file systems from FAT16 to FAT32, or FAT16/32 to NTFS--and, unlike Windows utilities, vice versa.

Although it's extremely rare for Partition Commander to cause data loss while working its magic (even through user error), users are cautioned to back up critical data before altering partitions. Nevertheless, V Communications added BackStep Wizard, which keeps track of drive changes and allows users to undo certain actions. Unfortunately, this feature is limited by the very nature of drive partitioning: it can't undo the most destructive actions like deleting an entire partition.

Partition Commander 6 includes System Commander Personal Edition, a menu-driven interface that simplifies booting computers with two or more operating systems. The one-two punch of Partition Commander, used to add a second OS, and V Communications System Commander, used to access it, demystifies multi-boot configurations to the point where nearly anyone can enjoy them.

If you prefer a more hands-on approach, the automated wizard steps aside, giving you complete control. Add or create partitions, and delete, resize, move, and copy them. Set up partitions for data only, or create partitions to handle Internet junk. You can even set up separate partitions for swap files to help increase the performance of your PC. Partition Commander also provides safe partition resize for FAT/FAT32/NTFS and Linux ext2 type partitions. And if you need to convert partition types, Partition Commander lets you convert from FAT16 to FAT32 or FAT32 to FAT16 or NTFS to FAT, including NTFS compressed volumes.

- Partition Commander Version 8
Partition commander is not worth 10$ much less 50$. I am a advanced user, and have 8 years computer experience. I have two drives (Win XP), and wanted to partition to install Linux on C:. Well, needless to say after I got the partition set up (that went ok, but the system interface is clunky), and the process is extremely slow. After installing, the boot loader (system commander) took over and ruined my dual boot settings, and after trying to restore the previous MBR, it almost destroyed the contents ... Read More

- Did in my hard drive.
I followed the instructions and I'm not a novice. This program hung on the last step in the procedure and rendered my data useless. Rewrote all the file names to garbage dot garbage and random file sizes up to impossible. All I can say is I'm glad I backed up and I'm upset losing a weeks worth of time just getting running again from trying to save lost data. I'll never have my computer back the way it was.

I'm running Win ME and have a C and a D hard drive. I did back up the C drive because it has most all of the OS stuff and it was the only drive I wanted to partation. I tryed installing the software three time within Windows and it stopped at the point of retriving the system files. So I rebotted to DOS with the reboot disk I made and tried to just partation the C drive. It took all my files on the C drive and made one partation of which I couldn't get into, I could copy it to a free space on another drive ... Read More

This is a nice graphical partition tool. I haven't used Partition Magic, but Partition Commander was adequate for my computer and it was much cheaper than Partition Magic.

- Mixed blessing at best
I find it ok for all partitonoing tasks and resizing. It took me some time to read it thoroughly before proceeding carefully with the tasks. Not rich in graphics unlike Partition Magic, you had to be extremely careful with what you do. Delete the wrong partiton and there's no way to retrieve it back. So I reread the instructions over but was able to execute it successfully. The BIG downside is when trying to do multiple operating system as it claims to do but it fails miserably. Forget it!
