Product Description: Here's another reason to toss out those paper maps: the eMap. It's the size of a small, flat calculator, contains a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver, and weighs a mere six ounces. Even with its compact style, the eMap boasts an extra-large display for showing even more map data and the same power you've come to expect from Garmin handhelds - even while operating for up to 12 hours on just two AA batteries. The eMap features an internal basemap containing information on North and South America including state and country boundaries, lakes, rivers, streams, airports, cities, towns, coastlines, and U.S., state, and interstate highways. In addition, the eMap provides exit information for the federal interstate highway system. With the eMap, you will know when you are near services such as food, lodging, and service stations.Designed with everyone in mind, this unit will take you from the car, to the hiking trail, to the beach without missing a beat.Garmin eMAP Deluxe includes a PC Interface cable and an 8MB Data Card.
Amazon.com Review: Save yourself the humiliation of having to stop and ask directions on your next lengthy road trip: invest in Garmin's eMap Deluxe. The eMap GPS receiver will give you fairly accurate mapping information, directions, and even help you manage and track your journeys.
For those unfamiliar with the term, GPS (global positioning system) involves 24 satellites that circle the planet. At any given time, the eMap makes contact with at least three of them to determine everything from speed to location. So, as long as you're motoring around the great outdoors, you'll be in the know.
It features a detailed 120 x 160 pixel display, backlighting for nighttime navigating, and easily navigable controls. With the eMap's simple cursor control, you should be up and running with almost no effort. Considering this unit only weighs 6.7 ounces, it could easily be the best roadside companion on long drives--or local trips if you're that directionally challenged.
If you're going to do some serious pioneering, you're also in for a good deal of choices. You can catalog 500 waypoints, 2,000 log points, and 10 saved tracks. But there is a downside to all this power in the palm of your hand: Garmin supplies you with only basic mappings of major roadways and intersections. If you're looking for city-street maps or more detailed coverage, get the checkbooks ready. Garmin sells optional MapSource CD-ROMs that will provide enormous amounts of map data, showing streets, alleys, and even restaurants. A series of different Map CD-ROMs are available and cost, on average, about $170. When all is said and done, with hidden costs, you can expect to spend upwards of $350 to get everything you'd need out of the eMap Deluxe. --Dave Thomas

THE BEST GPS HANDHELD DEVICE BAR NONE!
I've used Garmin's eMAP since 1998 for roadtrips and as a supplemental checkpoint aid during VFR cross country flights in my airplane. I have hook and loop fastener patches neatly mounted in my car and airplane to "slap on" the eMAP (it has the furry loop patch on its back) and I'm ready for a 300 mile flight or a drive across the great USA.
The SCREEN is better than any of the newer GPS color screens, because it's bigger and the greyscale is crisper ... Read More

I have owned this unit for about 18 months and have absolutely no regrets. Yes, it did take a few weeks to learn how to use the unit, but it was well worth the time.
I found the easiest way to learn was to use it while navigating on long trips. By the time we got to our destination, I was an eMap expert. Want to find a decent restaurant along the way? Use the find/exits feature. Better yet, position the cursor on a major city and use find/points of interest/food. When traveling to Springfield, ... Read More

If you want to know exactly where you are, this is a great toy. If you want to figure out where you are going, this is useless.
I expected the GPS to be able to offer advanced features similar to what we have come to expect with GPS's built in to cars, or map websites on the internet (turn by turn directions). Or at least directions. Or at least finding addresses.
This was a disappointment, even with Garmin's map cds.
The fun part? I purchased some topographical map software ... Read More

This is a nice unit, and it is interesting to read the glowing reviews of customers who have owned the Garmin eMap for two or three weeks. I have owned the unit for over a year. It works well in the US. It will not guide you street by street to a location, but it will guide you "as the crow flys." You get a straight line between you and the destination. It works.
It does not work well in Europe. I purchased the UK and French CDs. I installed them on the memory card and used them in England, Wales, and all ... Read More

Although I've been very happy for my eMap that I got for Christmas, I've been frustrated with the lack of documentation. The documentation for the unit (there is also a guide to the PC software) is limited to a quick start sheet and a slim printed "manual" - which contains little more information than the quick start sheet, really.
Between the documentation and experimenting, I've managed to figure out most of the basic features of the unit. The less obvious features and indicators, however, remain a ... Read More
